Ok, here is my mistake for the weekend project, I think.
I had a small whole dug, 24 by 20 and 14in deep. It was for a small mail box on which will be made of brick only 24 inches high and 10 inch wide more or less.

I bought three bags of concrete mix and half way through the pour and mixing I figured out it was not going to be enough. The stores were closed. I had two bags of mortar mix that I used and put in ½ inch stone (note sure about the amount maybe 1/3). I used my tractor bucket as a mixing bowel keeping the concrete and mortar apart while mixing. Then kind of mix 1/3 mortar to 2/3 concrete cement and the extra ½ inch stone. This filled up the whole nicely and I was able to strike it smooth.

My question is how much did I weaken the pour and will it hold up. Any idea folks.
Thanks
Roger

For what your doing, it won't be a problem. If you added some rebar or wire, it would be better, but again, don't worry about it.

thanks for the input, that puts my mind to rest some. I did fail to mention I went on the cheap as far as rebar etc. I had a pound or two of old gutter nail that I pitched in very so often just for laughs and some where to put them. Might not help much but sounded good at the time.

thanks again
Roger

You'll be okay.:)

If I use sacked premix I always get some portland cement and strengthen up the mixture a bit.:D

And here I thought I was the only guy in the world who did that.

If I own the property, and I am doing the work myself, I am going to go overkill all the way.

You guys aren't alone. I do it too, probably way too much as some of my pours 'glisten' when it cures.

Oh come on Dave, you really thought you were the only guy who did that?:)

We "do-it-yourselfers" are notorious for over building everything. I always said if one nail will suffice, three is just right!:D

Well, I don't know about that..... One of my uncles was a fine carpenter and had built a handfull of houses mostly by himself. One of them was moved because the owners decided on a bigger home after about 10 years of living in it. He was there to watch it going down the street and his comment was "I would have put a few more nails in it if I knew that this was ever gonna happen.":eek::eek::eek:

The house was fine, and I'm sure it was as overbuilt as it could have been anyway.:D
