I bale with a 1070 compact tractor. First used this baler with a 22 hp Yanmar. I put out a 40 lb bale about every 13 seconds (1 second per stroke). Pick the bales up with a 1012 stack wagon. Same tractor for mowing (NH479).

It depends a lot on the baler. The 14T above is already kind of a compact baler. I spent many years putting up 5K to 7K bales a year on a John Deere 336 and it would move the Oliver 770 7000lb (both rear tires liquid filled) around quite a bit. Especially when getting into heavy hay, not to mention it would kick the governor in pretty well. We used a 15 foot draper head to windrow and on bad years we would windrow two rows together so we would be feeding in quite a bit of hay at a time.

Currently I have a JD 2320 which has a 23 hp motor and I know for a fact I wouldn't be able to run that 336.

What each person has to do is evaluate their money, situation and reasoning and come up with the answer to if it is worth it or not. There is no right answer.

I agree with Vstee. It all depends on your situation. Me I am retired and enjoy nothing more than being on my tractor and after buying my mini haying equipment from TractorTools Direct I couldn't be more pleased. I baled with a 14T on my JD3320 and to me it"s not worth tearing apart my Tractor even though it could do it. This mini equipment that I bought is really built and it comes from Italy not China and I expect a lot of years of use my Sons will get out of it after I pass away.

I am baling with and older Hesston 4550 with a 26.5 PTO hydro tractor. It works great. You can find them at a reasonable price. It is an inline baler and good for small tight spaces. MF also has a nice small round baler that your equipment can operate. As others have posted there are many smaller units like the JD 24T you can run. In my case I spent the extra $$$$ on a reliable unit.
