Small tank for farm diesel installation

Are you going to fill it with diesel or #2 heating oil?

In NY, my dealer will not fill a tank he suspects will be used for on or off road equipment. And the state will come down on him if he does, and gets caught. He told me the only thing I could do is pump from my HHO tank directly to the equipment, or another tank.

Yeah, I guess I did spell that wrong.

It reads, to me, like the last sentence contradicts the first two and I just don't understand wtf you are saying. That's all.

More like the first sentence doesn't make sense. #2 home heating oil is #2 diesel. HHO and OFF ROAD diesel are the same as diesel at the pump but road use tax is not added and it is dyed.

HHO and OFF ROAD diesel are meant just for those purposes. It is usually dyed (red or pinkish) diesel. The fuel supplier is not allowed to deliver either of these if they are going to be used (or they suspect they will be used) in an ON ROAD vehicle. It is against the law here because the state does not collect the road use tax they add to the price of diesel at the pump. A person found using dyed diesel in an ON ROAD vehicle can get a substantial fine because they tried to cheat the state out of tax. It won't harm an on road vehicle but the state calls it tax evasion.

I've never had any12Volt electric pump last more than 2 years up here in Michigan winters. 2 Years ago I switched to a GPM lever double action pump and no issues. Certainly not hard to pump and fuel filling (my 100 gallon truck tank) is a trip up town to the co-op, not a big deal for me.
A trip to town for me would be a 50 mile round trip and I certainly don't want to haul my 100 gallon tank around all the time nor do I want to load and unload it when it needs filling. Careful storage and you wont have any algae. Neither I nor my BIL have any fuel issues and we don't use additives of any kind. His tank is just stuck under an open on 2 sides shed while mine is totally enclosed. Neither of us have changed the fuel filters on our tractors since we got them and still no water accumulated in them either.

In one of my old Ford tractor service manuals is a section on the "mysterious disappearance of fuel in an above ground tank". Evaporation was the culprit and the fuel was probably gas. It too showed to tilt the tank away from the outlet with a separate drain hole at the bottom to drain off accumulated water. I built a very inexpensive "car port" and keep my mobile tanks under that...see below comments to keep rain and sunshine off the tank.

Neighbor had a large, 500 for sure, maybe 1000 gal. installed and it had to have a moat around it to contain any spillage. Don't know if the supplier required it or Texas law. A lot of 300 gallon tanks around here on stilts and gravity delivery which is what mine was when I had a supplier.

I am a believer in the water separating filter at point of usage and use the filter brand mentioned earler in the thread at the delivery end of the hose . When I change my fuel filters on my tractors, never any water in the water separator.

I am a believer in Power Services treatments for stored fuel (surely others just as good) to prevent the growth of algae and to aid in water removal. I just refilled my tanks and in looking down into the 55 gallon drums with a flashlight, the fuel remaining was dyed but otherwise crystal clear and no signs of algae nor water.

I use a battery powered pump which I got from TSC. It's the cheapest they sold and was less than $200. It pumps so fast that on my Branson which has two tanks connected with a hose once it gets up over half full, I have to slow the nozzle to keep the fuel from running up in the neck.

I tried onsite storage for a few years and then the dealer closed down. So, I took an old trailer made from the bed of a p/u truck and put 3 - 55 gallon drums in it (keeps me under the DOT haz-mat decal requirement....just barely) and when I need diesel I take it to a 7 mile distant town where they sell farm diesel. Just filled up Saturday for $3.39. Road tax here is 40 cents. I didn't feel that my operation was large enough to support a truck mounted tank and after retiring I no longer have a farm truck anyway.

I think you got some good suggestions here so good luck.
