That's a 2 way street. I can take my tractor places you couldn't get your atv thru. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

For instance.. ever have a big spider land on your face while brush cutting heavy growth, flip out, and then when you recover, you find that you have just mowed a 10' wide path thru a stand of 3" sweet gum trees that -used to be- 20' tall? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Been there.. done that..

what I was thinking. Tractors are just too heavy to compete with an ATV as far as going off-road

The difference being, when you are on an atv, you go around 3" diameter trees... On a big tractor.. you go over them... Anything that you can get the front axle to clear is usally more or less 'just like flat ground'..

That's why they do land clearing with big tractors, tracked equipment and such.. and not atv's.. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That is certainly true - but pretty much any tool looks like a toy compared to something bigger. My ATV pulling a Swisher rough cut mower does a great job clearing trails. It does exactly what the big boys do - the mower mows down anything and everything the puller climb over. In my case the limit is somewhere around 2 inches.

To me, that is the definition of a good setup. It makes you think - WOW I barely drove over that thing and then my brush hog just destroyed it!

Plus I can fit between more of the 12 inch trees neither of us can go over. :) I imagine someone has a bigger rig which mows down even those :)

That said, unless you need something small to manuver between trees or if an ATV will get you places a tractor won't, the tractor certainly is a better brush hog.

Tractor for sure. My ATV is fun and good for getting somewhere quick on the property but can't do 3% of what the tractor can do.

Hotwheels,

The Toolcat would do what you are looking to do but unless your friend can get you one heck of a deal it would cost quite a bit more than the tractor price you listed. Also note, at least for me, it is not something you use in the lawn area. While it does not tear up the turf it weighs too much and will create depressions if you have soft spots.

Rent a Toolcat or skidsteer for a day from your friend with a grapple and a Brushcat to get your areas opened up so it is easy to maintain. I've rooted out several 2-3 ft boulders with my Toolcat, it's a little groundhog.
