If 48" on a Kubota BX or JD 748 is still too big (and if you don't mind walking), consider a BCS 853. It can be bought in diesel, and can easily be switched from 38" mower to a snowblower or snow blade. Its locking differential and R-1 tires will allow it to go just about anywhere a 4wd tractor can. For cross-slope mowing, it is far less likely to roll than just about any riding tractor, with the exception of a Steiner or Ventrac (which cost like 500% more).
I have the tires of my BCS 850 filled-solid with puncture-proof foam, which adds plenty of weight down low. Unfortunately, mine is gas, so I am limited on the cross-slopes. A diesel upgrade is planned when funds permit...
