Smoking and dying

   / Smoking and dying #11
It is a Branson 2810 and best I can tell from my manual, fuel filter must be doing "both". I did remove and checked the air cleaner (yep, I now all about mouse nests in engines) and it was clear so that's not the problem. Smoke is black from exhaust, but I'm also getting white smoke from some sort of hose that looks like an overflow hose that runs to the back and opposite side of the engine from the exhaust pipe. I haven't been able to find out just what the heck that is with my limited Branson manual, but I'm going to take another stab at it tomorrow. Oh well, on the plus side I'm good with horses...

in that case.... get rid of the tractor and do this :laughing: :licking:

Unfortunately...

Much as I would LIKE TO have and use draft horses.
They need a LOT of maintenance, whether you use them or not.
I doubt that I would acquire the necessary skills in a short enough time to get useful amounts of work done with them (instant grat. personality type, etc) and the time to hook up and unhook implements - Wow, probably WAY over what it takes me to change a 3 pt implement right now.

So loading up a tractor and taking it in for repairs is a hassle ?
These guys need vet visits and they do NOT fit in the family SUV (-:
Vet repairs ain't cheap, so might as well fix the smoking 'n dying tractor )-;

White smoke is either un-burnt diesel or "burning" water. I'm pretty sure that is it un-burnt fuel coming out of the crank case vent, or a water drain hole on the elbow of your exhaust pipe. Definatly worth tracking down though. Water drains are usually a thumb screw on the bottom of a glass or plastic sediment bowl, or a thumb screw on the bottom of the filter itself. However, since it runs and your getting a lot of black smoke before it chugs and dies, make sure all of your air intake lines are clear, even after the filter. I have found mice nests piled up against the turbo. Now, If I remember your tractor right, the fuel filter is inside the sediment bowl, on the back of the tractor on the right side. I could be completly off. Some one here will hopefully correct me.:D I'll be following along to see where things lead. Good luck!

Both white and black smoke out of the exhaust can be unburnt fuel on a deisel. Black smoke is usually caused by not enough air to burn fuel, usually a restiction in the intake such as plugged air filter, or turbo failure. White exhaust smoke can be unburnt fuel caused by low compression, injection timing out or it can also be caused by coolant being burned. Does the engine sound like it is being put under load before it quits as this could be caused by a stuck hyd. valve.
