Should a smoking Kohler engine be encountered, will Kohler repair this under warranty or just say this is normal and not a defect. The other thought I have is with the oil used in this engine. It would seem to me if the valve guides are to blame, from what I'm reading here on the forum, would'nt syn oil eliminate this problem if used from day 1. Tell me what you think , hit me with your opinions........ /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I doubt Kohler would say that a smoking motor is normal, how many hours are on your motor and does it smoke contiuously or at start up? I've always considered Kohler a premium motor and have akways had good luck with them I can't imagine them turning their back on you if your within the warrenty period. what model engine do you have?

Smocking is bad for health - even an engine.

Perhaps a few more details would help.

Using synthetic oil since day one could have been your problem. Using synthetic oil in a new engine will not allow the rings to seat properly. Synthetic oil should only used after at least the first oil change, just my 2 cents....

It's probably a real dumb question, but have you checked the oil level lately?
The only time I've had a Kohler smoke on me was from the machine sitting and gas flowed through and into the oil. It raised the oil level way up (and generated other hazards) but it smoked like a yard fogger.

My slt 1554 cub cadet smokes badly every now and again. There is nothing wrong with it. CC said it is that when you shut it off gas is sprayed into the engine but not burnt. The heat of the muffler causes it to pop really loud sometimes. Then when You start it next time it smokes like crazy. CC said after running it let it sit on idle for 30 to 60 seconds then shut it off. I did and it works.

The 1000 series cubs & any vertical shaft engine for that matter, can get oil in the combustion chamber if you park it nose-down for any lengh of time. You will get a huge cloud of blue smoke on start-up from this. A puff of black on startup will be caused from the use of the choke. You need to keep your kohler throttled up as you shut-down or you will get a 'pop' nearly every s/d.
G/luck
