It seems like this year has brought a good crop of snakes. I dispatched 2 rat snakes last week. I understand they're beneficial, but my wife and kids would never understand that concept. Plus, they seem to hang out near the chicken coop, so I suspect they're stealing eggs. When I was mowing today, I could smell "snake" near the well house and the large mulberry tree in the backyard, so I suspect we have a few more around. Last year we had three 4 foot rat snakes slither down the branches while we were sitting in the shade beneath sipping wine with the neighbor. One was a female and the "boys" were trying to wrap up and mate with her.

I also killed a copperhead (2 footer) at the dear camp and just missed killing 2others (3 footers) this past week. The first time I've seen snakes at the camp.

It is quite hilarious to watch a person who has seen a snake and are scared of them :D I was working in a new house in a subdivision a few years ago when I heard a loud scream, and there were several screams to fallow, I ran outside to see what was going on and there was a 250 lb muscular built black dude on his knees on the roof of his SUV, screaming like a girl for someone to help him,:D I walked over and he begain to say sir I wouldn't come around to this other side... there is a big-ol-snake over here, I walked on over to take a look and found it was only about a 3 ft Garter snake, I reached down picked it up by its tail took it across the street and turned it loose in an undeveloped lot where it most likely came from in the first place, He Thanked me but then ask me if i thought it would be coming back? I told him I doubt it because he probably scared the snake half to death witrh his screaming,:D

Eddie, I know it's not funny to you, but sometimes your snake posts just crack me up. My mother felt just exactly like you do and would absolutely wet herself on sighting any live snake. Instantaneous uncontrollable terror is the only way I can describe it. As much as it makes me laugh, I know she and you cannot help it and you have my sympathy. But, I also hope you won't take offense if I'm a bit amused.:D

Funny thing about Amarillo...I grew up in Mansfield, OH...lake effect snowstorms. However the worst snowstorm I have EVER ENCOUNTERED was on I40 in Amarillo.

Hey Mustang Sallies DAD I'm in Mansfield Ohio now! lol

I been in Texas, the snow & ICE is not that bad at all, big difference is the native texans have no snow removal equipment and no clue how to drive in snow...

I was down there in the late 80s when there was a snow storm, they closed everythign and was maybe 1" of snow. I wanted to see a movie so headed into town. next thing I know I see a cop pulling me over. I slowed & pulled tot he side & stopped he came up on me and was about to rear end me, so I started to pull away slightly to prevent being hit. this idiot state trooper whom was sliding sideways at me then had the nerve once he approached me ask if I was thinking about trying to outrun the cops.. ! I laughed pointed to my OHIO license plates & DL and told him I was only getting out of the way of his sliding car...

anyhow he left me off with a warning seeing I was from Ohio and serving in the military & all.

snakes.. hmm.. I would really like to have a mice eater here...
a non-poisonous one...

I just caught 3 mice in the basement..

But I can deal with the mice..
that sticky trap caught mom or dad and 2 babies..
gonna go throw it out and put another down there...

I see both sides, kill the snakes and save the good ones..

In another thread, I posted the names for 2 areas on our property...
Copperhead Corner (2) and Rattlesnake rock (1)..----
So we're 2 for 3 in killing them..

I walked into my shop on Tuesday to throw some garbage in the garbage can. I heard a rustle on the table I was standing beside and looked. There was a 3' copperhead on the table. Thank God the man door was open or I would be repairing the wall.

I ran out of the shop and slammed the door. I then opened the garage door and pushed out my Kawasaki mule. All the while watching the table for the snake. I couldn't see it so I called my neighbor to bring a gun with "rat" shot. I stood watch over the table to make sure the snake didn't get away.

He came up with his 44 magnum with rat shot and we began looking for the snake. I took a hoe and would reach onto the table and drag one item onto the floor at a time. Then I would throw that item into the driveway. There was a small (13 gallon) garbage can sitting in front of the table. When I picked it up by the rim with the hoe we saw the snakes tail flicker in the can.

I proceeded to "carry" the can into the driveway with the hoe. Jim handed me the 44 magnum and I shot the snake through the can 3 times. I would have shot it 5, but those shells are pretty expensive.

I then dumped the contents of the can in the yard and beat the head off the snake with the hoe.

I built a big fire and began cleaning out my shop. I showed my kids the snake and instructed them as to what to do if they ever saw a snake. I then placed the snake in the big fire and sent it to "h*ll" where it belongs.

On another note I had a 4' chicken snake living in my barn. It has been in there a couple years that I know of. I went to get eggs last week and it was curled up in one of the nest boxes eating away. It had to go be with the copperhead.

My 7 year old told me that some snakes were good, because they eat rats. I told her that is what rat poison is for.

I'm with Eddie. The only good snake is a DEAD snake!!!

Firefighter9208 thats another funny story and I can envision the happenings that took place :D
your 7 year old is a smart kid  You should try and get you a King snake he'll take care of all other snake problems, ;)..... reminds me of back when I was young and working on a House for a man who built way back in the woods the middle of 200 acres, My crew and I had taken lunch break there were no outside wall board on the house as of yet, we were at the mid level of the 3 story house and could see all around outside, one of my guys' seen a large snake on the ground and started freaking out having never seen a 7 ft King
he then started chunking bricks at it hitting it several times, the King was wounded and slithered on off into the brushes, later that day the builder/Homeowner came up and this guy who had hit the King with the bricks was telling the owner that he has got one big snake hanging around somewhere out in the woods, But not to worry he thought he might have hurt it bad enough to it will die, the owner Looked at him  as though he could have killed him..... and told him that he purchased that snake and turn it loose on his property on purpose to kill off the other poisonous snakes, and he better hope that the King din't die, the owner began to look for his snake, as well as the employ look for another job! at the owners request did not want the guy on his property:cool:
end of story ;)

I had been on my tractor all day...and was hot and tired...it was the middle of summer and I put the tractor to bed and walked in my shop ..still in the fog of work and walked back to the shop sink to wash up before going in the house...as I started to reach to turn the faucet on..there was a coiled snake, fangs bared glaring right at me not 6 inches from my hands...and as another poster posted, I am sure glad I left the shop door open or I would have been replacing it..I ran backwards as fast as I could and came back with my 22 Ruger with shell shot and the snake was gone...In my mind it was a posionous snake the was it curled to strike...Only good snake is a dead snake I say !
