My wife almost picked this up thinking it was a stick. Let out quite a squeal. Can anyone identify?

Hognose.
Here is a link to see different colored ones. They are very cool to watch if he/she will raise up like a cobra and hiss...it is all a scare tactic since they are non-poisionous.
Most I have found just roll over and play dead...not very exciting but funny.

I forgot the link /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Hognose

The head looked diamond shaped. I thought any snake with that shape head was poisonous. I don't know a whole lot about them though.

I agree, hognose!

Right after a hurricane, I needed to get out the chainsaw from the garage. I reach for the case, and I hear a hiss. I think to myself, why is there air leaking from my case. I reach again behind the case and hear the hiss again! This time I realize that is not an air leak. I have no idea why I was thinking a chainsaw case could be pressurized. I look behind the case, and this snake lifts up like a cobra, spreads its neck wide like a cobra, and hisses at me. I thought for sure I was looking at a cobra!!!! I jumped back, and started yelling for my wife to get the shotgun! Of course, I stop and think... Cobras are not native to Florida. So, I tell my wife I am going to catch it and put it in the trashcan. It has to be worth money to the local reptile tourist attraction. I use the garden rake and relocate the snake to the trash can. A friend of ours comes over, and identifies the snake as a hognose. Darn! No money! And yes, I was stupid enough to catch what I thought was a cobra! Anyway, what an amazing imposter that hognose was! I let him go into the pasture. I still laugh about my stupidity.

There are several non-poisonious species that when their head is laying flat it will have a diamond shape.

All poisonous snakes in the U.S. are pit vipers or coral snakes. Coral snakes are small and have red-yellow-black rings. Pit vipers are all very large diameter compared to length and have distinctive pits in front of their eyes. Of course, most snakes won't hold thier heads still so you can clearly identify them. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I suspect many innocent hognose snakes have been killed by someone thinking they are water moccasins.

Here is one way to identify a venemous snake from one that is not - the eyes. All venomous snakes have slit pupils - like a cat. All non-venomous snakes have round pupils like ours. Of course you have to get pretty close to tell.
