( I don't kill snakes or much else either. We're all in this together. )

Cockroach's included????

Do you pluck a tick and let him go ? they are in "this " with us!

Are you a vegitarian?

I ate something I killed tonight . that deer made my spaghetti very tasty! i have no remorse for killing him , i respect the animal, but i also like to eat those animals.
now i don't find snakes tasty but some other animal does!
and sometimes i like doing something nice like feeding another animal that is in this with us! so in order to feed that other animal i must /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif kill another animal!

And i sleep very well at night. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I said I believe, so I don't know for sure. However, considering Chris lives in Virginia, I doubt it's a western cottonmouth. Three factors went into my thinking: one, it was near the water. Two, it was pretty feisty, as Chris described. Three, Northern Water snakes look like the one in the picture, which does not have the triangular shaped head of the snake it is usually confused with--a copperhead. Adult cottonmouths also have the usually distinctive, large, triangular head, and the ones that live in virginia usually lose their patterning as adults and appear almost black or dark green, with a light underbelly. And they are much fatter than northern watersnakes. Here is a picture of an eastern cottonmouth:

Here is a picture of a northern watersnake:
Northern The other alternative, I think, is a brown water snake, pictured here:

Brown snakes usually have more patterning than northern water snakes, are more docile and are fatter, often being confused with cottonmouths. I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure it's NOT an cottonmouth.

SoArk - I catch your posts every once in a while and I enjoy them - haven't read them all, but it seems to me you contribute good sense here (I liked your pawn shop idea for tools, for instance).

By any chance do you catch Ted The Predator every so often on cable? Kill It & Grill It? No problems there, far as I'm concerned. We also enjoy a lot of vegetarian recipies, although the places we have to go to get them are a little strange, sometimes (I s'pose they'd think the same of us).

We like the critters, and the veggies, which we are planting right now. Our 2004/05 supply of beef is walking around in the next door neighbor's pasture, a harmless vegetarian named Star, turning grass and grain into higher order protein for our future enjoyment on the grill. She's gonna die next year, and we'll take her some garden waste as a last meal, pat her on the head, and wave to her as she goes for the Big Ride to the slaughterer.

I assume all the /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif & /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif mean you were yukking it up. Hope so, because even if Harv's a veggie, he's still got teeth - they ain't real sharp, but he can gum the bejeepers outta ya. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There's more to that book than the cover he's showing you. Maybe you already know this; now I know you do.

I love it when someone from UVA territory goes to VT for research /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif One of the pictures was on a VT edu site. Believe it or not the locals tell me we don't have any cottonmouths around this area. You need to go further SE down towards the GREAT DISMAL SWAMP area. We do have our share of copperheads though. I'll try to find one around here for everyone and post a picture

Knucklehead yeah i was just having fun. my sister in law is a veggie and i have fun with her also. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I love for her to call about dinner time and tell her i am about to eat bambi and ask her if she wants to return to us flesh eaters!
I like uncle ted but sometimes he really gets out there . i think he does hoping PETA people might really watch his shows.
i would love to hunt with him once though!

I bet you can taste star all ready. a big old porter house cooked over a open fire! MUMMMMMMMM

I grew up with my grandparents on a farm. we always raised a steer for our use. we raised chickens and they taught us how dispatch them and pluck them for consumtion. they were teaching us that all food doesnt come from the grocery store. and yes it was all a living thing once. some folks say " i just couldnt eat it if i looked into it's eyes before"
i can understand that some folks can't stomach that and thats ok.

now i do get upset about poachers thats my pet peave. folks that will shoot a deer and just leave it. man that rips me! yeah they are feeding those poor other animals but i have a passion for deer. heck if could figure how much venison cost me per pound! wheww
i am working on getting some new food plots out. lets see lime, fertilizer and seed. oh and not to mention trailering my tractor and equipment the 80 miles to my happy hunting ground. but i will love it this fall while i watch those deer eat my planted stuff for them. i'll take a few for my family and enjoy the rest as i watch.

I guess i got off topic a little. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif sorry!
I hope harv don't gum me up to bad cause i really like his posts on building stuff.
maybe it's time to turn the page. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

We are kinda having two parallel conversations here - the snake scientists /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif are probably closer to the topic than us - although we do keep mentioning PETA & animal rights (they have the right to remain tender).

We always bought "London Broil" or some slightly fancier variation of chuck - we'd look for two things: marbled meat and price around two bucks a pound. Then we got our first side; now we're ruined for pink store meat. Our first home cooked porter house, ribeyes and even the more familiar cuts really sealed the deal - we ate the rib roast over a year later - a no no according to steak snobs, and it was still great. We also get to leave it a little closer to living when we grill it, because the Smart Half knows were it came from.

After I posted my reply I hoped it wouldn't be too harsh - I didn't mean it that way, and it probably wasn't necessary at all. Now we know you got a good sense of humor. Like I've said here before - if I didn't have a sense of humor I'd have no sense at all. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hmm.. New person to these pages, but I live in the desert west and lived in northwest australia in the bush for a bunch of years where 8 of the 10 most venimous snakes in the world lived in my back yard. Have kids, dogs etc, never had a problem, never had to kill a snake. I have seen them keeping the rodents undercontrol. Have a love/hate relationship with them. Hate to love them but I do.

Jonathan

The pic of the Northern water snake is a little light in shade. Ours around here are darker. I think they have different shades depending on the area they are living in, because I too have seen lighter ones.

They are also quite agressive. I watched a buddy of mine decide he had to play with one. Only held onto it for about 3 seconds. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Then the blood running off his arm caused his grip to slip and the darn snake crawled away. Made him pretty sick for a few day too. Course, if we'd washed him up and bandaged him, he probably would have been okay. But, heck, we had fishin to do. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
