I was taught (and follow that advice) to not step over logs and rocks, but to step on logs and rocks. A fine line, but if stepping on a log then your next step is away from the log, rather than just over it where you can't see what is on the other side. Most snakes will work hard to get away from you if they hear you coming. When they don't is during the time they are shedding their skin, and may be partly blind. Then they sometimes hold their ground and get feisty.

I could not agree more with you!
As far as I am concerned there is only one kind of snake!

my opinion of Rattlesnakes...Son killed this one after he found it beside the front door when he came outside...it made it to the garage, where I fished it out with a hoe and finished it off.

Bird, as usual, you have lurched into the truth. I forgot about Hawaii because my mental development stopped in 1958 before it became a state. I think Hawaii may have no snakes at all. The other state has snakes but not any poisoness ones. Sound like you know which one it is.

Hi T-Bone

<font color=blue>"I also wondered WHY DIDN'T YOU KILL IT?" </font color=blue>

There are two reasons why I don't kill snakes, the first being that they are a protected species over here and therefore illegal to kill, and the second is that I don't like killing anything, they were here first, and no matter how many I could kill there would always be another to replace it. So I prefer to make sure the kids are aware and know how to react. Also there's a local snake man who will come and remove any that are in houses garages etc. and he relocates them in the bush.

Regards

Chris

Re: Snakes are out \"must be Spring\"

Glennmac, I've always heard that there were no snakes, poisonous or not, in either Hawaii or Alaska. Never been to Hawaii, but the first time I drove to Alaska in '72, I snapped a picture of a big sign at the first (rest area?) with a list of state "facts" telling about the state flower, state bird, biggest carnivore, etc. and the last line said "There are no snakes in Alaska" (and someone had penciled in below that "The biggest mosquitos in the world"/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif).

I'm in the same state with Ronjhall. Our Massassauga Rattler is the only venomous snake although we have a big black water snake that can be pretty aggressive, bites like a crocodile and can leave a nasty infection. The rattlers here are officially protected, and you can be ticketed for molesting them. Officially, I understand they are almost extinct, but I don't think they counted the 3 or 4 I've seen in the last few years.

<font color=blue>only one state that has no native poisoness snakes</font color=blue>

When we were in Denali Park in Alaska, a ranger stated categorically that there were no snakes (at all) in Alaska, poisonous or otherwise.
