Re: Snakes are out \"must be Spring\"

Hmmmm, my state of knowlege on this subject really is fixed in 1958 because I had in mind neither Hawaii nor Alaska. There is yet another state, in the contiguous 48, that is reputed to have no poisoness snakes.

Well, Glennmac, if you didn't have in mind our two non-contiguous states, then my guess would be the state of Maine.

glennmac,

My guess is Ireland, if you forgot about Alaska and Hawaii then maybe this will slide by without being noticed. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Re: Snakes are out \"must be Spring\"

I would say Maine.
Around here, even at this time of the year, it pays to be carefull. the nights are cool, then during the day the serpents come out and sun themselves. They are pretty lethargic, but many a dove hunter has been bitten in the lower regions, because they sat down on or near a rattle puppy.

Maybe Rhode Island?

Another question: I'd heard that Steve Irwin, the guy who handled snakes and crocs on tv, died from a snake bite. Can anybody confirm that?

Re: Snakes are out \"must be Spring\"

Hate to kill the rattlesnakes because they do keep the rodents under control??? i hate snakes, but i watch ever show that i can about them, torturing myself i guess; but every show i see says the same thing, a snake will eat a good size meal every month. if you figure the time they are out, that doesn't come to enough rodents for me to give it a second thought. i kill a rattle snake, so 3 or 4 rats live that year. i don't kill the non-venomous snakes, in fact, as i travel around, i catch king snakes and bring them home to let go..i like their company a lot better.

GlennT,

We've got a good population of your Texas rat snakes here in SE Louisiana. I've run across a 5+ footer or two with lots of lumps along their lengths, so I guess they are feeding on rats & mice pretty well. They are also EXCELLENT climbers. My wife was working in our barn one afternoon & looked up to see a snake in the rafters, entering the loft. Didn't do her much good to call me at work, 50 miles away! I told her to be thankful we had a barnsnake to keep the rats out of her tack room.

Unfortunately, we've also had them in our garage, & I'm pretty sure they've been in my attic, although I'm not telling my wife. Neither of us want to move back to town.

By the way, a barn cat adopted us about a year & a half ago - - that's eliminated the rat problem, & we haven't seen a snake out there in some time. Now if I could just get him to take up residence in the garage.

In 9+ years here in the sticks, I've only seen two poisonous snakes, both copperheads. And they are the only snakes I've killed. The others I just flip into the woods - - although I know they come back as soon as I'm out of sight.

I don't kill snakes just because it doesn't seem to have any point. I leave them alone, they do the same. They sure as heck aren't going to eat me. Bunch of sissies afraid of snakes or what?

Re: Snakes are out \"must be Spring\"

you bet your sweet bippie i'm a sissy when it comes to snakes: that's the only critter that can deliver so much pain and suffering and is so hard to spot. i've had several friends nailed by cottonmouths and copperheads, but don't know anyone that got it from a rattlesnake. thats the 3 that i will go out of my way to kill, the rest are fairly safe.

You bet your sweet behind I'm afraid of snakes! But I rode bulls for 23 years so does that cancel out being a sissy? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
