I was watching a snake this morning [a black runner, I think], sunning himself in a flower bed just to the edge of the front porch steps. I'd guess that about 2.5' of him was exposed, the end of the tail was still under the steps. I was leaning over the rail directly over him when my dogs joined me on the porch. The snake must have sensed that something was up, because he put it in reverse - - something I've never seen before. No need to turn around - -he simply disappeared backwards. I guess you could say he slithered back. Did not know they could do that.

Yes and no, they can pick up a good portion of their body just a hair off the surface and pull back but as far as complete body reversal then no because of their underbelly scales are directional.

I run down a coach whip in my yard the other week... That thing sure had a high gear.
