As stated earlier the pupil of the eyes of a copperhead, rattlesnake and even a cotton mouth are slit or oblong instead of round, The markings of a copperhead are hourglass shaped draped across the back. Here is a look at the eye of a copperhead.http://www.paherps.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/copperhead_Bob_Ferguson.JPG
You are correct, far from myth, if one has a clue what to look for head shape, eyes, and color pattern can all be used. Growing up in northeastern NC, we had Cottonmouth, copperhead, 3-4 kinds of rattlers and a few coral snakes. But unless you're an experienced person in identifying them, leave them all alone. Even non venomous snakes can cause a nasty bite that can become infected quickly and some people are even allergic to elements in the saliva. Let the snakes catch the bugs and rats and watch where you step and gather wood, etc... and the likelihood of being bitten is lower than a snake's belly!
