Not really, but driving down to Charlotte from Asheboro on 49 this morning, came across the first cotton fields I've ever laid my eyes on.

Wish I had my camera, actually with the "white" covering the fields, it looked very pretty

Didn't look like fun picking though, and seems like it would be an endless job.

Cotton is king no more in our part of the South. Some of the farmers were fortunate to harvest theirs before Gustav and Ike hit. My home parish has only one operating gin left and they didn't gin a single bale this year! The state ag office had only 50 gins listed in Louisiana last year. I remember as a kid every town or community had a gin, but nothing lasts forever.

When I moved to NC I was curious as to why some towns have names like Snow Hill. It was because of the cotton.

When I lived in LA the cotton was picked and put into big semi trailer sized trailers with "wire" sides. Well big to a kid. I remember being out in the cotton fields and I could not see over the plants.

A few years ago cotton was planted on the wife's family's rented farm land. The cotton was bailed into big bales at least 20 feet long. Maybe 8x8 feet square. The farmer just dropped these big white bales all over the fields. Like hay bales. Just MUCH bigger and white.
