Why is that? Some sort of "self esteem by association"?

Yes, heard the same tonight on NBC Nightly News, and that it was a family member stuck in the snow that he was helping when the snowcat started to roll. I think, but am not sure, that the pic I posted in post #5 is of his actual machine with him in it. Looks like you have to step on the tread to get in and out.
In that case it would be very possible to slip trying to get back in a rolling machine by climbing over the snow covered tracks. Easy then to get thrown down in front of the machine.

fox news =After successfully towing his own vehicle out of his driveway, Renner got out of the snowcat, and the massive snow groomer started to roll. "In an effort to stop the rolling PistenBully, Mr. Renner attempted to get back into the driver's seat," Balaam said. "Based on our investigation, it's at this point Mr. Renner is run over by the PistenBully."

Just a sad, stark reminder to make sre when you get off of a machine (running or not) to make sure to take all proper safety precautions- setting the brake, turning off pto, etc, etc.

I have to consciously think about that when I get out to clear the clogged snowblower, or clear the radiator screen when mowing. I tell myself “do it right, it only takes a second for something to go terribly wrong”

Those doors open from the front , it appears and they are big . I would guess it was rolling forward and he fell off trying to get around and open the door from the rear . Yes machines will kill ! Kevin .

At least with a tractor, you have a slim chance of shooting between the wheels if it's freewheeling. Why does it not have a deck over the tracks at the door? Is it looks, because it does look cool? Or because a deck would cause a massive snow/ice jam?

Looks to me like there is no way to get onboard without stepping into deaths doorway  . I would have taken one look at that situation and said oh hell no I aint trying to stop this ( especially with snow on the moving tracks) This nearly deadly accident was totally avoidable and the descision to try to climb onboard was a poor one. He's lucky to be alive
