Snow shoveling heart attacks

Our first storm a few weeks ago (11/3) dumped about 14" of wet snow. The next day I was driving past the house of an elderly lady... when I saw her out shovelling I had to stop. We cleared out her mailbox, and although she said that she wasn't going to put her plow on because there was no frost in the ground; it was equally clear that she didn't need or want help shovelling a path back to her house. genetics surely helped her achieve her age; (+-80)
yet I'm sure that her independent spirit is equally responsiible.

The article even says using a snow blower is dangerous. I use a 4 wheeler with a plow.

Yeah, but my biggest problem is getting that darn plow mounted on the vehicle! I want a plow for the quick attach on the skid steer. Oh, wait a minute, then I'd have to take the heavy steel tracks off of the skid, that's worse than mounting the plow :( Maybe I'll just stick to what I have....or let global warming take care of the driveway

I'm 55 and I don't have any problem shoveling snow, other than it's cold and takes a long time.
But that's the key. The longer it takes, the less chance you have of overexerting yourself.

- Don't shovel if you have a known heart condition or haven't been evaluated by a physician recently
- Get a smaller shovel. I use a plastic grain scoop shovel. It picks up about half of what a standard snow shovel picks up, and the raised edges on the sides of the scoop keep the snow from sliding off the sides like it does on a snow shovel.:D
- Pace yourself. If you have a strap on heart rate monitor, use it, and keep your rate within or below the aerobic levels.
- Dress warmly so you're not cold, but in layers so you don't get so hot you're sweating.
- Breath in, breath out, breath in, breath out. Point to remember, if you stop breathing, you stop breathing.
- If you're shoveling too fast to carry on a conversation, you're shoveling too fast.

There's only a few things you should be shoveling at all: stairs, porch or deck, right next to your automobiles, and any place else you can't get your tractor into (like maybe a roof).

Yeah, the only trouble with that is all the dang snow our northern members are getting. We didn't get hardly any snow, but it sure got cold the last week. Anytime we have single digit temps here in November before Thanksgiving, it is considered pretty darn cold down here.
I was in Springfield two weeks ago and it was colder there than in Boston or NH. So good luck this winter....

But anytime you are feeling sorrty for yourself, check out the weather at Mount Washington, NH. Currently it is -2 F, with the wind 74mph gusting to 89mph.

Ah, camped up there many a time. Meaning tents and sleeping bags!

Haven't been to this website in in a year or so. They really screwed it up. Used to be much more user friendly/informative.

That's why I have a tractor and snow blower. Funny thing is I wanted a snow blower for years and wife always said no. Then she was home by herself in a snow storm and then all of a sudden it was a good idea to get one. Weird! She even went and picked it up.

Even that can be improved for less effort. :)

The problem with shoveling is you are usually panicked , late to work , kids on the bus , trash can to the road .Nothing like a tractor

I've never even given shoveling a second thought. My inner yard is about 1/4 the size of a football field and the driveway is a mile long - clearing it all with the tractor takes a little over three hours. Been that way for a little over 32 years.
