I purchased a used snow thrower to go on my cub cadet 582. The impeller was rubbing the housing in one spot when I turned it by hand. When I removed the impeller to get a better look I found the blades deformed.
No before picture.

The end of the blades were bent back. No weld at the end of the four blades.

The four blades and back supports were twisted and that deformed the square backing plate.

After about an hour of pounding it no longer hits the housing when turned by hand.

Now to add some weld and metal.

I just went through this with my old walk behind John Deere TRX snowblower. Apparently, I had hit enough rocks over the 20 plus years I've had it to finally damage the impeller to the point it was scraping the inside.

Much like you, I had to hammer the snot out of it to straighten it out. After a few ineffective hammer blows, I mounted the impeller in my vise and broke out the torch to make life a lot easier. It runs smooth now.

Impeller 2.jpg You can see the torch marks in this picture.

Impeller 1.jpg Straightened out as best as I could.
