Awhile ago I posted a question about the hydraulics on my Tool Cat and you guys were very helpful and knowledgeable in answering my questions.
Maybe someone can help me again.
I recently purchased a used snow blower for my older Tool Cat.
What should be used in gear box?
Seems to be varying opinions on the net.
There is a greenish circular site glass on the front of the gear box.
Should the fluid be half way up that or just to the plug beside it?
There are no identity markings or numbers or mfg details on snow blower anywhere so just wondering if you guys can help identify it.
The previous owner had no idea what make it was.
I'm trying to attach a pic of the gear box and the machine here to help.
Thanks in advance your expertise is appreciated

If I were you, I would remove the 4 bolts on the top cover of the gearbox. Then, if you have a oil sucker, you can change out and clean the inside and get any moisture out. Maybe you could just roll the unit onto the ssqa plate so you can wash out the gear box. The placement of the plug to the right of the "glass" looks correct for the gear lube level.

Thanks for the info.
I have already had the top plate off and was thinking I would empty whatever lube was in it, clean out the gear box and replace with new.
What lube grade would be best?
Net shows varying lube 75 80 90 etc so not sure what is best
Any idea what make this unit is?
Just curious

if it were me I would use the bolt right side of the sight glass as a level, it looks right for level from other gearboxes I have seen,

if it were me, i wouldn’t hesitate to use 90 weight gear oil in the gear box.

are you sure it’s gear oil in there though? i ask because i’ve never seen a site glass for gear oil, only hydraulic oil. Unless the gearbox is separate from that site glass.
