I have a Boomer 3040, so basically the same tractor as you. When I talked to a dealer that preferred to sell the New Holland blowers he recommended the 84" unit that NH's literature recommends with my tractor. I expressed concern that this was too much blower and he said that he hasn't had any complaints with it combined with my tractor. However, every other dealer I talked to that was selling primarily Pronovost (Puma), Rad Technologies (Blizzard), Allied/ Buhler or Erskine snowblowers recommended the 74" model that their company produced as the best snowblower for my tractor. Most of those companies produce a 72" and a 74" blower and the 74" is appreciably heavier, beefier and more capable than the 72" even though it's only a 2" difference in cutting width. They all felt that my tractor would easily handle the more heavy duty 74" models but that the 84" might be just a bit too much. I ended up buying a backhoe with my fun money instead of a blower, but when I do buy a snowblower I'll likely buy a 74" model.

Well, here's the scoop: I went out and bought a snowblower today. It's a Buhler/Allied 73" model. It is an older unit that is in excellent condition. The 73" is almost identical to the new 74" models except the 73 has an actual gearbox instead of the open gears. And the 74 has the skid shoes. About everything else, functionally and dimensionally was close to the new stuff. I'll get some pics when I get it home.

It sounds like you've made an excellent purchase. Congrats.

Yeah, I'm fairly confident in my decision. I will be going to pick it up next weekend if time permits. Then I guess I'll look at it and twiddle my thumbs, waiting for snow:D
Thanks again to all who participated in this discussion.

Congratulations sounds like you got a great deal. I'm sorry I didn't get back sooner kids and crap going on, my dealer isn't so sure he wants to sell anymore 84 inch snow blowers to smaller tractors. He has one guy complain with a TC 48 that it doesn't have enough power to run it in heavy wet snow, so I guess you made the right choice :). It's really funny, that new Holland advertises a 40 hp tractor can handle it. I guess it's just wishful thinking, Or they must think that everyone will get light fluffy snow LOL take care and post some pictures ;-)

Perhaps the New Holland blowers have a smaller impeller, therfore requiring less Hp.

no they have a 28 inches fan, the same as most competitors, and with the nearly 34 inch heigh that 7 foot fills up fast. you probably could run a nine footer if you just go slow and don't take the full pass each time, but I suppose that defeats the purpose of 9 foot LOL take care
