Yeah my manual says to change at 200 hours, but the dealer told me to change the oil and filter after the first 50 hours. As for transmission, is your tractor 4-wheel drive? That may be why you need to change your transmission oil so soon.

I'm going to change the engine and tranny oil at 50 hours. Thanks for the input everyone. My manual does have Jan. '07 on the inside cover. Like ya'll said, I guess being a 4wd is why the manual states to change the tranny oil at 50.

Thanks again,
Mud

Mud,

I see that your 4350 has the Fwd-Rev Synchroshuttle/full Synchromesh transmission. Do you have to step on the clutch to change from forward to reverse? That transmission is a little more technically advanced ;) than the transmissions in our 3525's... I'm betting that if you don't have to clutch to change direction there's a big clutch pack in there for the forward/reverse shuttle, if not, a big heavy duty synchronizer, and then synchronizers for each gear as well. During break-in I'd bet that there's a lot of stuff that comes out of that clutch pack as it wears in and gets comfortable with life. They probably want you to change the transmission oil at 50 hrs to get that contamination out of the transmission so that it doesn't affect the synchronizers and the clutch pack itself long term.

I doubt that being 4wd has much to do with it, as that's only just another gear or 2 spinning around in there.

On our 3525's, there's nothing technological in our transmissions at all... no synchro's, no clutch packs, nothing but big ol' gears and bearings. About as basic as you can get. So I guess they figure that not much is going to change in the first 1000 hours of it's life, so no need to change that oil right away.

Enjoy your 4350, that ought to be a great little loader tractor!!

Yes you do have to use the clutch while using the shuttle. I believe the reason for the 50 hr change on the tranny oil, is because it is a shared sump with the Hyd system. They also want you to clean the hyd sump strainer. When you get this out I believe you will see why they recommend a 50 hr change. I did mine a couple of weeks ago. Let's just say I was a little surprised when I pulled the sump strainer. There was alot of small metal shavings. Probablly from the milling operations. The strainer is very well made and I have no fear of anything getting by it. Like I said when you pull the strainer you'll see why they want the tranny/hyd oil changed.

Yeah, definitely no synchros! Good thing there some heavy duty gears in there.

Yea Brian, civesnedfield said it. You do have to push in the clutch to engage the shuttle shift. I hope it turns out to be a good tractor. I think it will.

Thanks for the info civesnedfield. I'm glad you posted about the sump strainer. When I do change mine that would have scared the heck out of me!

Thanks again,
Mud

Yea at first it looks scary, but once you get a good look at the strainer it will put your mind at ease. By the wat do you know where the strainer is. It is mentioned in the manual but there is no arrow pointing to it.

No civesnedfield, I don't have any idea where the strainer is. I was going to have the dealer do the 50 hour service, but after reading all of these posts, I think I'm going to attempt it myself. Where is the strainer located?

I could be cruel and not tell ya. But I just can't. Look under the tractor on the right side. You will see what looks likge a pipe about 1 1/2" in diameter. A 3/4" +- pipe comes out of the front of it and heads to the tranny/hyd filter. Thats the strainer housing. It has two cap screws on the front cover. Take them out and you can slide the strainer out of the holder. Rather than mess with the hose clamp that connects the rubber line to the metal one I just disconnected the tube from the hyd filter.

It sounds tougher than it is.

Oh yea if you are going to do it yourself. The manual calls for almost 11 gallons of hyd/ tranny oil. Just buy 10 gallons. I think when I drained mine I only got about 8 1/2 gallons out of the system. Also there are two sump drain plugs. And I also dropped the front driveshaft cover. Wher the engine oil drain is located it looke like a good deal of the engine oil would land up in the cover rather than the drain pan. So I opted to take it off.

Ed, I printed out your post on the strainer location. Thanks a bunch! I have a few hours to go before 50, but I'll be ready.
