I think if I just invert a 4-6" drop hitch that will be enough vertical gain to make it

You think? The picture might be deceiving, but at level, that hitch looks 12-14" higher than my ATV hitch. Didn't you add a 12" riser? If that works, heck yes that would be the easiest.

If you have too severe an angle off level when the splitter is hitched, when you cross a ditch you will put the hitch in a bind. You might have to traverse those on a diagonal. For safety sake, add some chains. My luck that hitch would pop off and spear me in the back. Be safe!

I'm just talking for behind the pu, I'll build a riser for the quad that is the easy part

Sounds like you have things figured out. I thought you were asking how you were going to tow with the ATV.

Here's what I would do..... I will try and explain this best as I can without a drawing: get a pretty stout piece of 6 ft long (that length is a guesstimate) square tube (maybe 3"x3") and weld it to the axle between the wheels so that it goes to the "front" of the log splitter. The hitch would then attach to the end of this square tubing. I would then add an extra piece of steel for a brace from somewhere just behind the hitch, and it would be mounted vertically so that it attached to the beam that the wedge is attached to. This would lower the hitch back down close to where it needs to be.

Hope you can understand what I'm trying to say here!

Depmandog, thanks I like the idea of the safety chains!
Kebo, I thank you for the idea, I think I want to avoid welding directly to the axel which is also the hydraulic fluid tank. About the riser for the quad, the splitter is very heavy but still need some sort of gusset to the riser/reciever how high does it need to be(gusset), is there a general rule of thumb for gussets on a riser??

That should read isn't very heavy

Your hitch bolts on with 4 bolts.
What if you make a piece like the red one in my drawing below (Blue parts are already on the splitter).

Aaron's sketch is exactly what I had in mind as well. This would lower the hitch, and really brace things up so that if ever the "axle" hung up on something when towing it, it would likely not bend anything. I know I said weld it to the axle (which I didn't realize was the hydraulic tank) in my OP, but it doesn't have to be attached that low. The long beam could be attached at the bottom of the piece that you added just above the hydraulic tank, to raise the log splitter up.

I think you nailed it, now to take some measurements.

Also here's a little product review of this splitter, aside from having to lift the working table height I have to say I really enjoy this machine, it started today without too much trouble! It is about -40 on both scales here in the wind today. So cold in fact that the bar oil would not pour out of the jug when I went to fill my saw!! And yes it is the light/ winter oil!!
