I told her there was no way I was buying one... I think I have mentioned here once or twice I am a cheap bastard ;) Last year I had taken down an older shed that housed a sauna that the previous owners had left. I sold the sauna parts and the wood ended up in my 're-use' pile or the firewood pile as appropriate. I told her to find a design she liked and my son and I would build it. Stipulations were no drawers or doors where wasps like to set up shop. She picked this one: Backyard Potting Bench - Sunset.com which even has free plans but there was no way I was going to buy brand new 4x4's just to dado them down to toothpicks. I have lots of used 2x4's and a bucket of screws that also came out of the sauna. So my son and I got started, I didn't take any build pics but this is what we came up with:

The top was made of pieces of 1x4's from the sauna roof structure, I had my son (13 year-old who was just excited to be using power tools) use some 60 grit on the pad sander to knock the corners and edges off the boards to reduce splinters and give it 'some look'. They are nailed to ripped down strips of 1x4 at the front and back of the bench. Same for the bottom shelf.

An old 2x8 that I had laying around serves as a shelf.

The wire on the back is for hanging tools etc on using S hooks. It is part of an old hog fence panel that the PO's had left here. I cut out the chunk I needed using an abrasive cutoff wheel in an angle grinder. I found the clips in the electrical section of Home Depot, think they were called 'midget clips' or similar. The panel is made of 1/4" wire so the 1/4" clips worked perfect.

The only things I had to buy were the clips and the finish nails for the 1x4 pieces that make up the top. Everything else I had on hand.

So now I have a question, I really like the way the colors came out. Can I use water seal or the like to treat it and preserve the look of the wood? I am thinking urethane/polyurethane type stuff would eventually flake off if the wood gets wet and swells or with heat/cold cycles in winter? Thoughts and suggestions?

Thanks!

Nice job. My wife wants one to. Until then she has been satisfied with a 3' x 7' concrete table top I found for free. I built a base under it and put it beside the greenhouse. I am kind of like you...cheap...or I like like to say a re-purpose engineer:D.

I think anything you use will need to be reapplied every couple of years. I have tried polyurethane and it tends to flake. I have used Teak Oil and it does good but still needs to be applied about every year.

Look at the Minwax type stain/sealers. If you want to keep the original color you should be able to find something fairly clear. The water seal should work too.

I like that term! I like to get old stuff working again or re-purposed into something else... the fact that it usually costs little to no money is a bonus :D When I need a particular thing I like to dig around and find something that, while maybe not its intended purpose, will work. I walk up and down every aisle in hardware stores or similar places looking at all the stuff just so I have a mental inventory of things that 'might work'.

Charlz,

I do the same thing. We have re-purposed a lot of things from my FIL old home place.

If we see something at a craft show we take a picture and I make it. Now my wife just rips the pages out of magazines and tells me to make it.

If she wants it quick she says "I'm going to buy this if you don't make me one":D

An easy and useful addition to the potting bench would be a 3-4 inch board inside the wire rack at the back and on each end of the bench to enable placing a supply of potting medium for easy scooping into the containers and keep the medium from falling off.

In the same way a smooth surface of sheet metal, plastic, or formica-like surface would keep the media from lodging in the cracks (leading to rot of the wood top) and enable a complete sweeping of the medium off the surface with a dust broom.

What you have made is an innovative and functional repurposing of good material and these additions would make it even more so IMHO.:D

Looks good. I have used this stuff (urethane spar varnish).. I have done some cedar benches with it, over a year ago, and they look as good as the day it was put on. Has been out in the weather of course.

Charlz - What you've done is wrong. WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!! Now you've gone and done it. Spouse saw the picture of the potting table on my pc screen and went bezerk over it. Her quote "Oh - that would be easy to build. I want one!" (With a couple of extra features like a waste trap and wheels, naturally.)

yeah - sure, but 'easy' just ain't in the plans. Now I'll have another project on my list. Only problem - her's gets pushed up to the top.

I will tell you though, you and son did a very nice job. Well done!
