Maybe so Rob; but the quality of Chinese junk is scary. Plus they steal...err...learn quickly, especially when they don't have to actually invent anything, develop standards, etc.
This is the same thing we said about the Japanese 50 years ago. We used to call their products "Jap junk". If a manufacturer like Agilent, Intel or for that matter John Deere has a product made for them in a foreign country they specify exacting tolerances. Walmart probably doesn't so the foreign goods you get there are a lower standard. They might get the cheapest switch in a toaster for example that only lasts 1,000 state changes as opposed to 600,000 for Macy's. Made in one country or another doesn't preclude quality.
This is a true story. Walmart advertised, in a local paper, Hills Brother's Coffee next to a can of Hills Brother's Coffee from a local food chain's coffee. Both cans were exactly the same but Walmart went to Hills and said give us less coffee in the same size can. I think it was 12 oz. as opposed to 16 oz. Of course Walmart claimed their coffee was cheaper and showed the prices next to the cans.
It's not where it's made anymore, it's the specs. I ordered circuit boards from a company in Arizona. I specified copper thickness, board material, overlay stencils, etc. etc. The boards came a week later from, guess where? China. While I was surprised and annoyed that I was tricked buy a 'US' company, the circuit boards were perfect, electronically tested and I had zero failures in the field. If you look on manufacturer's websites for a relay, the company gives material , life expectancy, etc. Where it's made? Who knows?
Such is the way of business today.

The Japanese learned from W. Edward Deming about quality. With exceptions, the Chinese have not. Yes, I'm old enough to remember when 'Made in Japan' and 'Made in Hong Kong' meant cheap quality trinkets.
Until they get on the quality bandwagon, their goods are crap in my book until proven wrong.
Plus it pisses me off that American companies give away our manufacturing base with our government's blessing to what is still technically a Communist country.
Are all American goods top notch quality? No! I don't have a problem with imports; I have a problem with crap quality goods that puke prematurely that results in a waste of my money.
I have a problem with a company like Milwaukee that now makes their tools in China, yet charges the same price as if it were made in USA.
I have a problem when choice is taken away from me. I'd like to be able to choose between some quality made tool from the USA, Canada, Europe, or Japan versus some cheap Chinese made Harbor Freight POS.
A country that can't or won't provide for itself is doomed to failure.
Until they get on the quality bandwagon, their goods are crap in my book until proven wrong.

You can read about 1/2 the post above this and decide. Is a toy M-16 the same as my rock river ar-15. NO. It may say m-16 on it; but don't use it for self defense.

As far as I know you can buy the same mower they have at Lowes at the Deere dealer. Does it have to be bought at a Deere dealer to be a JD?
This is a good question. Does an outlet get the same quality as the dealer? I'm wondering if a big chain has the power to cut corners. Either way I think it's a disservice to dealers to have to compete with an outlet. I love my Deere tractor but they went down a couple of points with the 'el cheapo' mowers at Lowe's.
I know my commercial tractor is way above that but if it wasn't I'd be at the 'Bota dealer to fill my future needs!

I don't know about the quality issue? I wonder if the box stores have a fully stocked service department with Deere trained techs to do warranty work and beyond? If not, they should be able to undercut the Deere Franchises by hundreds. Ken Sweet

The L Series you buy at a box store is the same you would buy at a dealer. Our local JD dealer sets up the box store models for Lowes and Home Depot and will do any warranty work. Why anyone would buy from the box stores and not from a dealer is a mystery to me.

Same reason they aree buying the L series, they are cheaper.
