Very nice video, watched it a few times.

A key to waht you can accomplish if you have the patience. Nothing I saw was technically complicated. Basic measurements at best. What he did was an art, far from a science.

Grandpa Amu is pretty good with the little intricate things too:

Patience, self-discipline (along with having the pride/self-respect to do a proper job), an understanding of the fundamentals and time --- all the key components to doing quality work (no matter what tools are used, or what field of work).

....watching it reminded me of seeing some of the things my own grandfather made when he was still working as a (master) carpenter and watching him work on my parent's house --- as well as the work of one of my uncles (son of the previously mentioned grandfather) has done.

So I may need to watch a few more videos to see what other project ideas I can glean for when I retire from engineering in 19-ish years.... :D

A good friend of mine and his wife have a tradition of making Christmas Saints. We've been fortunate enough to get five. He carves them and his wife paints them. He says they can make one per day. Starts with a debarked log. He's 76. I hope to get many, many more.

To get any idea of size, that's a small water bottle.

Amazing video. I hope that is not a latrine bucket the kid dumps into the creek at 13:33.

Isn't that amazing!!! How do you learn to carve expression in the faces??

If he did, it's not as bad as making six trips to the big box store in your 4 door pickup, stopping at KFC or elsewhere each time.

I wonder where he got the lumber and what it is. How quickly will all that craftsmanship rot out? He also didn't buy paint brushes, rollers, trays, liners, rags, thinner, hand cleaner, masking tape, drop cloth, laquer, primer, preservative and end cut. Plus other stuff that just happened to be on sale! lol

All true artwork is just a mystery to me. I can craft things in a mechanical and scientific way, but no one would ever call me an artist.
