If I want something from Grangier and I'm not associated with a company, I just walk in ask for it and when they ask for company name I say cash sale. Never had trouble. The only problem is that some big accounts have discount terms in place and you'll tend to pay list that way.

Not sure about Gramgier, but in most places you can. Also when ever I need a company, I just use a name I like and call myself "xyz engineering". Never had a problem anywhere.

I use McMaster. They're online and you can set up an account easily. I use them all the time and their shipping is not too pricey and very quick. They have a 8pt 1" impact socket (item #5549A132 $12.46). Good luck.

I've used McMaster too, they are pretty good. They ship from a warehouse in Atlanta to me and I get it overnight with no extra charges.

Try a piece of old style drive shaft tubing, some are square, some are rectangular. If its a rectangle, just weld in some flat stock to shim up the big side, then weld a nut or an old socket to the other side. You also could weld 2 female 1" extension halves together.

try 12 point sockets they will work also if the bolts are not badly rusted !!!!!

Anyone out there know where I can find a socket made specifically for a square head machine bolt that is 1" square?

I'm renovating an old offset disc and these square head bolts are inaccessible to a cresent wrench or an open end wrench. Don't want to use a standard socket since I suspect that all I'll do is round off the corners of the nut and bolt head.

I finally got the bolts off using one of those GatorGrip universal sockets ($20 at Sears). My neighbor loaned me an impact socket (my backup to the GatorGrip).

The bolts are the ones holding the halves of the bearing blocks together. I used PB Blaster on them for about a week before trying the GatorGrip socket. I used my 1/2" socket ratchet and an 18" pipe cheater. A few whacks on the cheater with the sledge hammer and a little muscle power got the nuts off. I had to trim two adjacent corners of the nut to get the GatorGrip to fit.
