On the way up to my home town today to place flowers on the graves for Memorial Day, some of my siblings and I stopped at this sod house. One on my great uncles and his wife lived in it up until about 25-30 years ago when they moved into town, it was in a lot better shape then it is now. The house and farmland are no longer in the family.

As you can see by the pictures that one wall is partially down. Even with the long time period without anyone living in it and the state of disrepair, we found a advertising flyer in the house addressed to the great uncle from surge milkers and date Spring 1949. It is in pristine condition and appears to be only a few years old. How it survived this long and in this condition is truly amazing.

My real estate agent would call this a fixer-upper. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Very interesting pictures. We got a chance to go into a sod house a few years ago. It was at Pioneer Village in Minden Nebraska. It was amazing how cool the house was in the middle of June.

Think you'll find that sod house's are very thermally effecient. Biggest problem is leaking roofs after heavy rains.

Egon, I could see that being a problem on the first sod homes. First problem I thought of was having to mow the roof. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Sure would keep the goats gainfully employed!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Looks like in the pictures DUMBDOG posted, a little 20th century asphalt shingles may have solved both problems.

Neat pictures. The background reminds me of my place, native prairie.

No - no - no you do not want to mow the roof.
