they had sodium, metal halide, and incandecent. I really want the metal halide because its white light rather than amber like the sodium puts out, and the metal halide is still efficient, still dont know what brightness to get..

They got one at Lowes for around $30 that is dusk to dawn that will work perfect. Don't sweat the wattage, cause your compairing different types of lights anyway.

Do you need the light on all night? If not, then you could use a motion sensor that would turn the lights on when it detected any motion. You could have several very bright lights that would only run for 10 - 15 minutes at a time and could run off two golf cart deep cycle batteries and a single solar panel with an inverter and a controller so as to not overcharge the batteries. You could also set up an audible alarm system if there was a breakin.

I really need it on all night, you see, the garage and driveway are on the far end of the house, away from the front door, the wife comes in late from work sometimes and also leaves way before daylight sometimes and its black over towards the garage where we park and she has been wanting me to put up some sort of security light, the garage is a hair too far from where we park to use a motion sensor.

see in the diagram, the cars are about 40-50 feet in front of the garage, so i need something that will shine in that general area, just dont want it too bright, just cant figure out what size to get..
well, everytime i submit this reply, it changes the position of the house, the house is supposed to be beside where the cars are, not beside the garage..

Have you considered getting the wife a flashlight. A lot faster, simpler, and easy to install and use. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I belive my security light is Mercury Vapor but it is a yellowish amber colored light. Very effecient. It's mounted above an overhead door on my shop. It goes on at dusk & off at dusk. The light covers a large area. i utilize it most when when I have to go plowing in the middle of the night, It provides a nice light to mount a plow.
