Go change directions on the GST about 100 times. Then feather it into a pile of dirt. Next try to accurately back up to a implement. If you aren't convinced yet go load a pile of dirt in a truck.

That works ok on flat ground, but no good on hills. Around here tractoring on flat ground is a rarity.
I just dig down the hill instead of up it ??

And the tractor rolls down the hill.
Put the parking brake on so tractor stays put, dig, lift the rear wheels slightly, push tractor ahead, set down dig.
You sure like to make things sound harder with a shuttle or Gst than they actually are.

As I said different strokes or tractors for different operators, the debate could go on forever. Go, sit try and then buy.
P.S. Tractor is Clean because I wash/wax and detail it, gota do it!

Unfortunately I went to the dealer to test drive and the only tractor there with GST wouldn't start due to a run down battery. I didn't have time to wait so ill have to run by another day. However is it correct that no clutching is required from forward to reverse on the GST? Researching online I've read several articles that say that clutching IS required.

Never touch the clutch pedal on my G L3130GST, I even run the throttle up before shifting in the upper gears and it cuts down on the shifting lag.

If you set the hand throttle for desired loader speed you can power in and curl and lift while shifting into neutral and then reverse just before you break traction and a GST will give you performance getting close to the HST.

Use Super UDT and change when required as it does make a difference and that the GST is optimized for SUDT in the shift timing and lockup of the clutches.

I'm disabled and have had three of the GST tractors. No need to clutch at all. I can't even do it. The newer GST clutch packs have much quicker response time than that on my older L4200. Super UDT makes them shift in under or even way under a second. No way it takes two seconds on my tractors. Higher RPM helps and so does having the trans oil warm. I can do any kind of precision work on my L5040 with my loader and bucket. I can put the corner of the bucket on a dime laying on the driveway all without using my legs at all. So with the GST you can shift gears without clutching and you can change forward/reverse without clutching. I've put hundred of hours or work on these tractors without touching the clutch even once. Never any issues or trouble.

One reason for the confusion is many writers confuse the GST,Glide Shift Transmission, with the DT gear transmission. I've even seen ads online for GST tractors and it would be a DT tractor.

Devildog- you have a sweet ride! I clean mine up a couple times a year, even wax parts of it every couple of years, but no way am I as fastidious as you appear to be, or Paul Short, for that matter. How many hours on your tractor? Nothing wrong with clean, taken-care-of tractor, by the way. For no other reason than if you chose to sell it, it'll go fast for top dollar!

I also totally agree with your reasons for preferring the HST drive system. The precision of operating far outweighs the small loss of efficiency for most purposes other than strict pulling chores.

How about at least 100,000 times, no problem. Push ito a pile of dirt rocks etc, no problem, I go deeper than my freinds & neighbors GLand L's HSTs. Back up to an implemt. Ok, got there, HST all the way. Loading a truck, You have to pay more attention, so what?

Don't listen to any of us, buy what suits you.
