Soldering vertical copper pipe

Also a note to those who say to file the stop out of the coupling, these days the stop is made by stamping the o.d. of the coupling forcing the material to form a ridge on the i.d. of same, filing this ridge diminishes the wall thickness at this point, possibly future leak as this creates a weak spot.

this is insignificant...as any displacement will be filled with solder and will end up being no weaker than the rest of the sweated joint...

[edit]

with some couplings and inadequate applications I can see where this could be so

Yes pine, there are certain methods manufacturers use to achieve the stop, some stamp deep, filing this smooth will almost make the coupling able to snap in two with just your fingers.

Just filling this with solder just leaves a small ring of solder holding together, will it hold water, yes, will it take much expansion and contraction before failure, not really, I have seen this type of failure.

As you stated, the old heavy fittings are hard to come by.

Bob hope by now you have everything under control

Technically, sure. Or if you like, cold moves from cold to hot :) But there are always multiple modes of heat transfer going on...including convection. Try going from top to bottom and bottom to top on order of soldering the joints and see which works better...BTDT

In science class they told us that there is no such thing as cold, There is only heat or a lack of heat. Therefore, heat travels to areas of less heat.

I did not learn anything in school, I was forced to attend. Somebody's tax dollars were wasted.

When you think you are pretty good at soldering, stop by a jewelry shop where they do a little manufacturing and ask if you can work there a day (or maybe just an hour will be all you can tolerate) for free so you can learn how to solder.

If you have a hard time getting the solder to flow by capillary action (a liquid will flow into a narrow opening due to surface tension and adhesion), sometimes tinning everything before you assemble it will work when noting else will, including that most important of all procedures...holding your tongue right. Of course, It's important to wear the proper clothes also.

But that's why you want to use tinning flux, it has solder in it. When it melts, your pieces will be magically tinned.
