The same company asked me to design and build a tool cage for one of their offices.

It isn't often an old weldor gets to dabble in the sciences. I figure this project is all about genetic engineering of the preventive maintenance category.

I'm helping tools not develop legs.

I thought I'd show you the top view first. And for a good reason. I'm having a little trouble with double vision. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

This thing is sixteen by sixteen by eight. The framework is inch and a half galvanized (1 7/8") schedule forty pipe. The fabric is nine gauge chainlink.

We, company had two laborers and a supervisor come in today to help me install it. We had the three sides up and were adjusting the two covering panels. I had them attached to each other but not to the sides.

As we were squaring the the roof with the sides someone put a little too much into it. I happened to be the dummy inside with a two by four when the top panels came down.

There was a split second I'm sure when I held the roof panel unit up. It wasn't a long split second. The next thing I knew was the bad words were everywhere and I was getting up off the floor with the framework on top of me. It was not a pretty site.

The laborers were frozen in their tracks. The supervisor was trying to figure out how to help me without climbing on top of me.

I got out, sipped some coffee, figured out what I'd done wrong, and then we got it back up and bolted in place.

I hurt all over more'n anywhere else. This double vision thing is inconvenient besides being worrisome.

Anyway........

You'd figure a sixteen foot by eight foot overhead panel would sag.

This one doesn't. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The gate closed.

This was one of those fun projects I seem to always find.

Today's my father's seventy eighth birthday.

This week as I built this thing, six panels, I felt close to him even though he's in Arizona doing some fun project, genetic thing I guess.

When I was a young man working at the phone company, going to school burning up VA education money, and trying to start a family he worked for a fence company as their gate man. He worked five and a half days a week.

So invariably on Saturday about noon I'd show up with a project I'd cut out and had ready to weld up. It was on one of those Saturdays when he utterd those famous words fathers do to their sons. "Boy I think it's time you learned to weld."

But I'd show up there and he'd be covering a gate with fabric or cutting one out. I didn't realize it at the moments but I was taking notes.

So as I built these panels and the hands got busy the mind got to walk back through time and visit with my father as we built stuff.

It was a good week.

Some people get to have all the fun. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The double vision thing has went the way of all bad things.

I'm not sure what it was all about. Probably got hit just wrong so that one of problems from an earlier concussion was bouncing around like a b b in a boxcar. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
