..... My long term goal is to put a gate on my driveway with an automatic opener. I tried just closing it every night, but laziness, weather and my parents living in the house behind me makes it difficult. Have a closed gate would solve the problem. ....

Go ahead and pull THAT trigger!! You won't regret it. One of the best things we ever did at our rural property. Good, solid ag gate with a solar powered operator, and now a long-range driveway alarm too. Love it! Maybe still not as secure as possible, but we all FEEL much more secure, and it's great to not have to get out in the rain to open/close the gate, especially for Granny and Pa.

my brother had a visitor last night caught on his security cam. car stopped on the street, someone gets out of the passenger side, tries to open his truck door, then tries the van door, then goes to the car, and it opens. they (looks like a girl) gets in for a minute, then leaves and gets back in the waiting car and it pulls away. He didn't know the car was unlocked, but says he can't find anything missing.

Similar thing happened to us many years ago; the only thing missing was the loose change from the consoles. Either some onry kids or some stoner looking for a few bucks. We do lock them now.

Better also check to make sure nothing was added. If there was then may be back tonight after it.

Wow, there sure is a lot of posturing in this thread.

Personally I believe in obstacles, lights, dogs, and other proportional responses rather than risk blowing away someone who might be innocent of any criminal intent.

Not to mention that posting such intent on a public forum is about as dumb as one can get.

Many years ago a renter on this place had 7 Rottweilers. Word got around town (a den of thieves) that I was breeding and training them as guard dogs. Now I do not have any dogs except for the lab & retriever cross and the worst she would do is lick you to death. No Rotties at all, but I have never denied the story. (It sure helped having a senile old bat living at the end of the road towards town. Every time I went to town or anywhere else she was watching and making up stories about me, which the cops checked out and found were false.)
Nobody comes on this property at night and the ones that come here in the day time I usually run off. I value my privacy.
