Riptides, its easy for people to say what they would have done. In my opinion, you handled it correctly. Even more true since the outcome left nobody hurt.

I think carrying a phone with you would be some of the best protection. Dialing 911 as you are approached, and speaking to the person answering, has to end any planned invasion. Giving the intruder's description so they can hear you, and describing the vehicle in case they exit quickly, would likely prevent any future visits.

IPAD don;t phone home like ET. ISP do not hand out your IP to just anyone. Usually requires a bit of paperwork. Any LEO would be more professional. This guy was scamming you.

Apps will try to locate lost iOS devices (and Macs too). The App I have on everything is Find My iPhone. It also locates WiFi enabled devices.

And DHL, my bad.

True, and very easy to use an app like this.

Now, let's say you lost your device, and you have traced it to the OP's property. What's your next step?

Ask for a refund on that App?

If the Ipad has GPS, then yes, an app might have given him the location, and even the IP, but he didn't track it to your house because of the IP address.

Recall that I mentioned he tracked it via WiFi. And that is when more alarms went off in my head. I asked him "WiFi? How?" He said IP address. Well there ain't no free Wifi on my place. And, well there are things that must be done to connect with WiFi, if you know what I mean. On top of that, he said the area was between so and so and so and so that it could be found in. More alarms, because so and so is shall we say, signal dark. All in all, a good story, right on the edge.

Let this be a lesson for the rest of us.

A lot of us are in remote places.
When these type encounters happen you are usually in a surprised mode and trying to figure out the possibility of the situation. But always try to get the license plate number. At least the Law can look up the vehicle later.
