That would do a better job than the rotozip for sure. I used my Rotozip to cut out the center of a feeding stand I made for my dog's bowl. And like the earlier poster, I ended up with a small flat spot. Fortunatly the rim of the bowl covers it. Could have used the router, but wanted to try the Rotozip.

The circle guide I have is made of clear lexon and replaces the router's sub base. It has a slot in the middle of the arm and the pivot point locks in place. I think it goes up to about a 16" radius. There are longer ones available. Here's a link to some similar to what I have: http://shop.woodcraft.com/Woodcraft/product_family.asp?family%5Fid=3582&gift=False&mscssid=050990C66E5E04C40BBDC2BAD105B96A

Update on wifes opinion...

I think " /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" probably says it all.

She said I did better on the INSIDE cut using the jigsaw. The outside cut was nicer using the rotozip.

Sooooooooooo for my NEXT attempt, I might use the rotozip on the outside for that smoother look, and try the jigsaw for the inside. We will likely be able to hide some of my indiscretions with a bead of caulk. If that doesn't work, then it's time to move on to the router.

I wonder if I can work a new router out of this, rather than borrowing her uncles...

I have four routers. But if I were to only have one, it would be a plunge router with variable speed. The plunge router I have now is a Bosch, but Porter Cable and Makita make some nice units.

Seems I'm borrowing uncles /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Just got back from some woodworking store that's been here for 2 years. (just found it)

Bought 2 bits, 1 straight cut and 1 round over. I also got some template he said would work to cut circle.

Now, I gotta get router from wifes cousin who has it (away from uncles house next door)

If it's not one thing, it's another

I think you're on the right track. It's much easier for someone with out a LOT of experience to make duplicate parts with a set of router bits than it is to make those parts on a lathe.

Well, the project is 80% done.

The rounter works wonderfully. I bought one of those Jasper circle jigs.

Learned some lessons on the way to my bliss....

Go easy, so the pilot hole (which all circles are dependent on) doesn't round out a bit. I had one disk a touch smaller than the other because this allowed the router to change it's arc. (or did it allow the other one to be bigger? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

About 3/4 way through three of them, I finally realized I'm better setting up a form of production, for example, first, cut all outside edges, then round off all outside edges, then start inside.

None the less, learning along the way is part of what life is all about.

Glad it's working out well for you. A good router and a few jigs are very useful around the shop.

Now that you have the router, maple cutting boards in various sizes are easy to make. You can use the router to form the edges and perhaps add a juice groove arount the outer edge.
