Last year I bought a Herd spreader for my BX from my local Kubota dealer to salt/sand my dirt road. I quickly realized that the auger inside banged around quite a bit and would eventually leave marks on my new sander. I saw that Herd had an insert for the unit, but the Kubota dealer didn't know about it. I ended up calling Herd directly and asked about purchasing it. Not only was the price reasonable, but they said they will just stick the bill inside the package. I recieved it in about four days. I was astonded that in this day and age, they just took on faith that I would pay them. I wrote them a nice note and tell everyone what a good company they are to deal with.

Thanks for the reponses!!!

Call me Earl, but I do believe what goes aroung comes around. I'm avoiding that word though. I always try to help. Maybe this was my payback.

Last year when the hurricane didn't hit here but we got lots of wind and downed trees they canceled school for 4 days and I found myself with free time. I grabbed the chainsaw and headded for the farm. As I rounded the corner from my house, about 150 yards, I saw a elderly man with a carpenters hand saw trying to cut some 8" dia limbs that had been dropped in his mothers yard. I pulled over and took out my saw, cut up an hours worth of limbs and helped them stack them on the curb. The mother tried to give me 60.00, but I would not take it. Although they lived soo close I had never met them, and too be honest, haven't seen them outside their house since.

On down the street another man cutting limbs. This time they at least had a wet wood saw and less limbs. I only spent about 30 minutes there. I slowed my trip to the farm by about 3 hours, but I went happy.

It goes back to the golden rule, "Do unto others, as you have them do unto you.:

...Thanks Tony!

Give yourself a little credit for being able to connect with Tony.

When someone at a business refuses payment like that, calling the cash "something for the coffee fund" seems to help.

OOOOOOH, Running out of gas... I ran out of gas in my 1943 Ford military Jeep on the way to university classes in a real downpour (rag top kept me from drowning.) I had a low power CB handy talkie and made the gesture, a hail Mary one time oh what the heck radio call giving my position and situation. A guy coming up the onramp behind me copied the call, acknowledged it and pulled up with a gal of gas in his trunk. (gas was under $1/gal at the time) I tried to give him a $5 but he refused and settled for $1 to replace the gas so he could help someone else if needed. He did extract my promise to pass the favor on.

It just feels good to get or give help. I have been the recipient and donor of lots of help in the back country of Baja where a simple difficulty is often not just an inconvenience but can easily be life threatening.

I have friends and neighbors around here that just go around commiting random acts of kindness. I receive much unrequested help that I virtually never get to repay in full even when I look for opportunities.

kossetx,
These are the best stories to read.
Thank you for sharing.

I was riding to Sturgis in '94 from Southern California, usually you could see many bikes on the road. Somewhere in Colorado it thinned out and there was a biker on the side of the road so I stopped. He was out of gas. I ride an old Electraglide and had a 1 gallon gas can as a spare that I gave to him. He insisted on giving me $5 bucks but I refused. I followed him to the next gas station and we both filled up. He insisted and paid for my fill up there.

You do see a lot of that when riding. I have been stopped and many times guys will pull over to see if I need help. Those are good things.

I gave a local machinist the measurement and arc for a piece of flat stock ( 3/8" x 1 1/2" x 2' bent into a semi circle ) that i needed bent. I called it in, and said take your time. A couple weeks later i stopped by his shop and i saw it laying by the door... he asked me what it was for, and I explained that it was a replacement rung for an original ford tractor bumper, for a tractor i was restoring.

He said.. it took 5 minutes and was from the scrap pile anyway.. have a nice day... ( no charge ).

He made a customer out of me. The next machine work I had went to him because of that... mostly small stuff.. some repairs on steering shafts..etc.. but still... he earned the work ahead of time.

it's great to see people helping others.

Earlier this month the wife and I were in Las Vegas for the National Finals Rodeo. As we (and 17,000 others) were waiting outside for cabs, buses etc., a man and his wife from Kansas asked if we needed a ride. We asked if he was going near our hotel, he said it did'nt matter he would take us anyway. His wife said he gives someone a ride every year. They were about our age (mid 40s) looked safe enough so we did it. Great guy, would not take a dime, and saved us a 1-2 hour wait outside on a cold night. Don't believe the media, GOOD PEOPLE are still out there, even in Sin City.

I needed some wood planed down- and really didn't want to risk it with my small plane, so I checked with a local mill shop. $75.00 per hour, $25.00 minimum. I thought I needed 6 pieces done- he guessed somewhere between 25 and 50 bucks. Given that I was running low on wood for this project and it would be a lot quicker to have these done, I figured it was worth it. Ended up that I only had 2 pieces that needed to go an a diet. Took them in this morning- figured I would pick them up in the afternoon, or a few days. The lady grabbed them, headed to the plane- asked if I wanted them sanded as well. It took all of 10 minutes on the spot. I wasn't ready for this- no cash with me. I told her I would run to the bank and be back in a few-she said not to worry, just buy some donuts! You know I will- and if I need more custom work done, no question who I will see- with cash in my pocket! and donuts under my arm!

BTDT,
You are right about paying it forward. what i would do in wisconsin when driving hoe form work and it was really cold out is I would frequently pull in to the bus stops and offer women a ride. i gotta tell you there are not a lot of middle class people taking the bus in the winter in Wisconsin. Virtually all fo them were going to a low paying job or coming home from a low paying job. I knew this one bus stop in particular that the people would pick up the bus and then have to transfer at the hospital (where they woudl wait inside!) to catch the next bus cross town. The hospital was always the transfer point.

no one ever refused a ride. i would say "look in the car I am alone a single woman, it's awful cold and i'm going in your direction, I promise it is safe" they woudl hesitate look in the car and hesitate and then get in.

So many times when I was younger I would run out of gas, jsut trying to make it to the next paycheck so I could fill up. A lot of people bought me a couple dollars gas, I never had any $$ i would alwyas need to write a check. I don't feel it is safe for me to stop and help people with car problems on the roadway unless my husband is with me. But alone, when people are not looking for it ,in other words, there can be no trap becuse they were not asking for me to stop, and approaching women at a bus stop tht was always safe. You know they jsut really really appreciated being in the warm car with a ride to the hospital. They were jsut tryig to get by. Truthfully the hospital was not exactly on my route home but it wasn't much out fo the way either.

Pay it forward, that is sre the wya to go in life.
