Here's the only photo we have now. As I said earlier, this was taken by my son with his camera phone, so the quality is not great and he didn't pose the deer, so you really can't see too much of the rack detail.

Jim,

Everyone must weigh the advantages and disadvantages of keeping a home arsenal. Because I don't shoot or hunt, I never wanted or needed guns in the home. Now that we have a use for them, I don't have a problem with it. However, I don't see us as ever becoming "collectors". My son may have different thoughts on this now. As some have stated, he's hooked now.

Thanks for all of the replies. I'll pass the kind words on to my son.

You can always make a special room for them if that should ever come to pass. That is what I had to do. It is my retirement account now.

Looks like a nice buck. Especially for a first deer! I bet he is very proud.

I've hunted all my life. It has been a very beneficial thing for my relationship with my dad. We have always hunted together. From about the 4th grade on I was just crazy about hunting. Killed my first deer at age 9. My son killed his first deer, a doe on doe day, when he was 11. He killed a cow-horn last year. He killed a 4 pointer on opening day and a small hog a few days later. Now he's holding out for an 8 pointer. He likes hunting but he is not nearly as fanatical as I was when I was a kid. I lived and breathed it.

Now, my dad, my son and I hunt together regularly. As Martha Stewart would say, its a good thing. Hunting sucesses and failures help make a better person out of you.

Finally got a few more pictures of the hunting party and deer.

The 1st picture shows from left to right, the land owner who hosted the hunt, my son and my brother.

2nd pic is just a cropped close up of my son and brother showing off the kill. You may notice some red stuff on my son's face. The land owner wiped his face with deer blood as a rite of passage after his first kill. They had fun.

3rd photo shows the land owner and my son with the dee loaded up and ready to take home.

I was reading this and thought I would add in my son's as well (I assume it is OK with bmac?)

Anyway, like many in this thread, I do not hunt, but want my kids to be exposed to many things so they can develop themselves and what interests them. I do like guns (anything mechanical really) and shooting, just get a sick feeling when I have to shoot something and take it's life, so when I have a choice, I don't.

Anyway, I have several close freinds, one in particular, that fill this void very well for my kids, not truly an uncle, but almost more so in many ways.

Dean is 10 and has been out the last 3 or 4 years with Jim hunting, Last year he was allowed to hunt but missed. This year we worked on accuracy, got him some managed recoil rounds by remington so he would not flinch when the time came, and they went out on Jim's land. Dean and I took the hunter safety class this year together.

They were hoping for a nice buck for his first, but had the opportunity come up on this doe. She went about 130 and it was a frontal shot at 75 yards, they were stalking on the ground. Jim said he was slightly hesitant to let him loose at that range, with that small of a target but it seemed right. Dean steadied against a tree and drilled her centermast. Dropped like a rock.
Deans finger is on the entry, and the back of the neck is gone.

I just consider us very lucky to have responsible freinds that can expose my kids to intrests and things that I cannot.
