Massey Ferguson 65
This will be my first tractor purchase and although I am new to tractors I am pretty good with mechanics.
I am in the process of obtaining a Massey Ferguson 65 that has been sitting in a barn for approx 2-3 years and hasn't been run since parked. I am assuming that it is a 1958 model, although the current owner says it is a 1963. It's serial number is SGM658261 and the engine serial number is G1762446.
It is in decent shape, appearance wise, all metal is present and normal surface rust etc. Mechanically I am unsure. It currently does not have a battery but I did try to jump it with a car battery and it "wanted" to turn over after a couple of bumps on the ignition but stopped when I noticed some of the wiring getting hot and started to smoke. So I am hoping that the motor is not locked from sitting for so long. Checked oil and not water in it, but there is also no water in the radiator and no gas in the tank. Gas tank is clean inside. Need to do a more thorough look at in when I get it home. Once I get it clean up I know for sure I am going to replace alot of electrical, ignition, fuel and cooling parts, from there who knows. I am also getting an FEL, 5ft Brush-hog, Blade and Auger with line and corner post drills. The front tires were flat until yesterday and the back tires are practically new, they still have the cast nubbies on them.
Since I am here a few questions;
1. Am I right on the year? And what does the SGM stand for?
2. What does the engine serial number tell me in relation to this tractor?
3. Since it does not have a battery what size & type of battery do I need?
4. I haven't paid the current owner for this yet as we really have even talked about a set price, but he has indicated some where in the 2000-2500 range, does this sound reasonable? I still have to have the tractor and implements hauled from his place to mine.
Thanks in advance for the input and once I do get this tractor to it's new home I'll be sure to post pics.
Wish me luck.

Information from tractordata.com shows it to be a 1958 from the serial number you stated. Welcome to TBN from Tennessee.

I always worry when the owner says something that is not true such as in the year in your case. Then the skeptic in me doubts everything such as how long it has been sitting. However, once you get it running you will have a great work horse for as long as you keep her maintenance up. Good luck.

Welcome to TBN, prices are a regional thing but may be a bit high without making sure it runs, if you do get it to run and it's in fair shape the price seems reasonable. I use a 800CCA battery in mine, used in winter for snow removal and has never let me down.
