Folks, thanks to all for your advice, kind words and thoughts. Ted and evo803, I'm so sorry for your losses.
Island Tractor, I have an HF nearby, do you know the actual name of that metal bar thing? Trying to find stuff there by description can be challenging .
I did go to Home depot tonight and got a pickaxe.
I guess I'll just see how things go and hope for the best, try the fire, the pickaxe, and consider cremation as a backup. Somehow, I have always found some comfort in burial of our dogs here at our home. Doesn't make any sense, but there it is.
Perhaps Robbie will yet defy the odds and hang in there for awhile.

HF Central Forge "Post Hole Digging Bar" Item 93612. As I recall it was about $25. I was wrong about the weight, it is 17lbs (feels like 40 after using it for a while).
Works very well in compacted dirt when setting fence posts and I would would be much better than a shovel in frozen ground. A pick would probably do the same thing if you are digging a small trench but the digging bar works well for digging straight down.
We always buried our pets at home too. Cost us a gardening service once: Our beloved German Shepard "Prince" was buried in a flower bed in the back of the house and a talented artist friend made up an Irish cross to mark the spot along with the inscription "Good night sweet Prince". The next week the garden service crew saw it, assumed that my mother had buried her husband in the backyard, they immediately stopped work and never returned!
