I bought an older JD batwing mower that is in need of some new hydraulic hoses. The outer rubber is all cracked and in some places cracked completely off exposing the wraps of metal which are starting to break. There are some leaks near a couple of the rams. Haven't bothered to note whether they appear to come from the connections, the rams or the hoses.

The hoses from the two rams that control the wings are Tee'd together to a common connector.

The ram that raises and lowers the mower has both a 'push' and 'pull' connection and two hoses. (Not sure if this is the correct term.) This seems a bit odd. I would figure that this ram would only need one hose. (why would you need a hydro connection to 'pull' the deck down.)

So I figure that my first step will be to repair these hoses. I have no familiarity with the connector names or sizes nor hose sizes or hose specificationsbut need to either buy these hoses or construct new hoses.

The tractor ends of the hoses are a male slip connector about 3/4" dia.

The ram ends of the hoses are a male thread, about 5/8" dia. Need to measure.

My tractor is a 'bota 8540; the mower is a JD1508

This is the link to the mower, if it is still up.
15 foot batwing - John Deere 1508

1) What are the names of these connectors on both ends, for reference.
2) Is there a reference source anywhere that discusses various hydraulic connections? I imagine that hydro lines for a 20 HP tractor would be different than for a 100HP. But maybe not.
3) Is there a good source for these hoses online? Or should I consult my JD, Kubota (or other) dealership?

I looked on the TSC site - seems that they DO have hoses. I was at TSC today and they had nothing longer than 3 ft, but on their web, they have up to 12 ft hoses with 1/2" NPT male fittings, both ends. I did see some hydro slip adapters with NPT 1/2 (i guess) female fittings but it was really slim pickin's at most were sold out.

They are rated at 3500 psi. Is this enough? And what other options would you look into for hoses?

Just checked again and TSC does also have 3/4" NPT hoses. Guess I need to measure mine, but I'm sure they are the 'standard' size.

I would just take the hoses to your local shop. My dealer is cheaper than TSC. Maybe try one hose first to see if they are friendly.

I to would suggest you stop by your local hydraulic shop. They will be able to make up a replacement for you and it keeps the business local.

Shop around. People mention local places and most real auto stores like NAPA can make them but what got me was the sticker shock. I had a 2 footer made with 3/8 npt on each end and it cost me $35. I went to TSC for a premade hose that was 4 foot and it cost $10. Go figure.

My first choice for hydraulic hoses is a store that specializes in them. Here, Aaxion is where the dealers and contractors all go for their hoses. Even my dealer that makes hoses will go there for what they don't have and then mark up the price for the hose.

Look for a specialty store that does just hoses, that's going to be your best place.

Napa does hydraulic hoses too. I've gone there on weekends and have always been able to get a hose built with them for a fair price.

G'day try the BareCo site on the web they have a handy mix of premade hoses and they also have an excellent chart on what fittings are what and their size actually i print off and laminate them and give them to my apprentices:)
