While I was out spreading the free dirt my neighbor gave me, that guy drove past and asked if I wanted more. This was good stuff, perfect for putting a final coat over the dirt my neighbor dumped.

Here's what it looked like after the dump truck load was dumped and spread. The finished product is around two feet higher in the center than when I started.

Funny that this topic came up. I was just thinking the other day about catching the county supervisor and asking if they were gonna be cleaning any ditches in the area. I know everyone seems to be looking for dirt and the county don't want to haul any farther that they have to.
Be my luck they would have some huge project that they want to keep the dirt for. We'll see.

 I was just thinking the other day about catching the county supervisor and asking if they were gonna be cleaning any ditches in the area. I know everyone seems to be looking for dirt and the county don't want to haul any farther that they have to. 

I have some land about 50 miles south of here, and I need fill there. Since I'm not done there, I can't catch the Township when they are clearing the ditches nearby... My dad caught them one year and they dumped several loads. Bad thing is, there's lots of beer cans mixed in with the dirt from the road ditches! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Becareful with that free dirt that comes from the ditches, I did some tractor work for a customer last year to spread out the free dirt from ditches and that was the nastest stuff I have ever seen. It was full of beer cans, broken bottles, pieces of pipe and all kinds of roots.

Pretty much the same thing happened to me last year when spreading some of that ditch dirt for someone. I had to go get my landscape rake and clean it all out well after spreading it on his property. I pulled out unimaginable amounts of crap.

Last time I bought top soil was about 1991 and it was $25/yard
And I had to pick it up in my dump truck and deliver it myself.
If they delivered it then it cost extra.
That was 15 years ago. Hate to think of it today.

Priced fill dirt recently at almost $100 per truckload.

Dirt.

At my old house in town I brought in dirt to make raised beds. The dirt/clay was $20/yard. Screened black topsoil was $30/year. At one point the topsoil dropped to $20/yard. This was over 5 years ago.

At the new house I had one batch of dirt brought in for the cost of the truck. A few months later I had to pay $10/yard and the truck time from the same guy. His source of dirt started charging. This was not dirt it was clay, rock and roots. Not clean but it did what I needed done.

Now I'm buying topsoil at $22/yard. This is unscreened mess with chicken poop, wood chips, clay and some rock. Don't really like it because of the rocks but its what I can get. The same guy is selling some really good wood mulch for $18/yard. The truck that can drop 30 yards at a time is $60 a load.

So far this year I have used 46 yards of wood mulch and 30 yards of "topsoil." If he had been delivering today I would have gone for another 20 yards of the topsoil and 30 of the wood mulch.

The yard and landscaping is looking real good but we sure are paying a fortune for dirt and chips. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Of course if I had to pay someone to do the work the price would be even worse.

I paid $350 bucks for 25 yards of not bad top soil. From other prices listed on this post I guess I'm not doin too bad. But if you need 10 loads it starts adding up quick !! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
