Sources for steel drums

Let me be one more to chime in on how well these barrel stoves work. I've got one that I've been using for better then 20 years, on the same barrel. It is a 30 gal maple syrup drum, which is a heavy gauge drum. I use water glass to glue some asbestos gasket material around the door, and replace this every 3-4 years. The fire is very controllable. I have fire bricks lining the bottom, and a hand made grate out of re-bar to hold the wood off of the bricks and to give me some room to shovel out the ashes. It works great. A good stove at a good price!

There is a place on Waterloo Rd. North on Main Left on waterloo about 2 blocks on left. They sell precast and miscellaneous stuff. They have had them in the past I don't remember the company name at this point though. But any machine shop would have them

yes I'm still looking for a trailer 7000 dual axel with dual brakes preferably or a 10K one with 18' flat. pull type as I hate the 5th wheel style sticking in the bed of the truck... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I need a better truck too, broke my key switch this AM -7 ambiant temps & jumped in, turned the key (which turned and inside collum I heard a POP and key went freely around) the key works and is OK but what ever the key tumblers inside connect to are broken... luckly it made it to the ig ON spot even though starter would not crank I jumped the starter SOL under hood, then got to work (luckly with out stalling it) on time. then stalled her using 3rd gear and slipped out clutch a bit fast. poped hood and pulled battery + cable off SOL and set it asside. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

anyone ever replace a 91 ford key switch? is it under dash via a rod or under the steering wheel? I have a chiltons for it SOMEPLACE but can't locate it right off... /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Ed,

I think you've got the current record on barrel longetivity. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Those maple syrup drums must be pretty heavy-duty. Glad to hear the stove has worked out as well as it has.

I think I'll definitely put in some kind of grate.

Drove over there this afternoon - is Cardinal Tie the place you were referring to ? They were closed, didn't see any drums setting out in the yard - railroad ties and a bunch of concrete block. I will call them tommorrow.

Yea that's it. I know they keep strange hours and products I have actually bought barrels from them before. Both the plastic and the steel. Good luck but I know if you look around a square mile over there you should find something. There is also the Propane Gas dealer on Main and Portage lakes drive that may have them in back. I think there is a place on Massilon Rd just north of 619 on the left in Green that sells bulk Oil and fuel that may have them. I get Diesel delivered from Cambell Oil and I am sure they have them. They must have at least 5 locations in the county.

I have used old water heater for my waste oil heater, lasted long time and the metal is thicker. The ends are also dome shaped. Another good piece is if you can find is a large air compressor tank. check with commerial plumbing and HAVC comanies. If there are commerial building being renoavated sometimes they are replacing larger tanks. These are heavy walled units that will last forever. Check out want was in them before cutting with torch.

Hey rsywan:

I picked up 2 of the plastic ones this week (when it was really COLD) and that morning starting my truck I broke the ignition switch (something plastic sounding snapped inside behind the key /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif ) it was luckly stuck in the ig ON point and I poped it out of gear and jumped the starter sol to get her fired up.

anyhow the plastic ones I got are light weight ones probably only 3/32" thick or so no the sides , not exactly what I awnted but should work with a bit of proper attachment and concreteing them into the ground properly too... I'll get 2 more or so to make up my drain catch basin and then pump it out as it fills up. using them to put in a sink/toilet into barn and already have 2" running all way back to my septic tank. these will be essencially a big holding tank incase my pump dies and the pump will pressure feed the water back into proper septic but these will be set up so that water ccascades from one to the other and pumps form last one in series. I'm going to pressure feed a 1" line back into the 1st drum tank to stirr the material in there and that does continue to feed, the center two will more or less be resivior in case pump dies while 4th will be a pump housing more or less like the cheap (expensive costing) ones found at lowes or HD ect.)

anyhow I'm not sure of the thickenss of the steel drums yet I can go look but they seemed very heavy compaired to other drums I've handled.

Spiker,

Didn't mean to ignore this offer - it sorta got lost in the traffic of the other threads I was participating in.

Thanks, but no need at this point. I found a guy here locally, out west of Medina in Wellington, that selling some smooth-sided (no hoops), open head 55's on ebay for $5 apiece - they are basically brand new and seem pretty heavy. They contained liquid silicone rubber that was inside a plastic liner in the drum, so the inside of the drums are very clean - basically clean enough to eat off of and the drums were in great shape.

If anyone here locally needs some of these drop me a PM and I'll give you this guys contact info. He had probably 50 or 100 of these drums, with more on the way. A great deal @ $5 apiece I'd say.

Let us know how the catch bain plan works out - I might do something similar with my shed - would beat having to walk back the 400'+ to house when nature calls. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
