We stopped using them around 2008:laughing:

Freezer wasn't 6k, think it might of been 1.5k, and still running like a champ (edit, looked at my 11 year old post and the freezer was a little over a grand).

Other than getting some local beef raised down the road, wife now orders from here if anyone is interested 12 years later:D

Clicked the link and see that it looks like they are "green". Dunno about anybody else but 100% grass fed beef would make me give up beef. Beef flavor comes from fat. Generally fat comes from corn in the "finishing" stage.

Well, we differ from teejk's opinion because we happen to like the way the meat tastes.

The biggest con is sometimes you litterally don't know what you're going to get because I guess they don't know at the time of your order what they will have. You basically roll the dice and they send you what they have (harvested).

However, whatever they send you, they send you recipies which my wife has tried, and it's actually pretty good.

At this point, we've only been using them for a year.

My wife (the expert) mentioned that you can buy organic cheaper, but the quality in her opinion, has been exceptional, and I happen to agree with her.

We also get a 1/4 cow from my buddy. Yes, it's fed corn "in the finishing stage", but honestly can't tell the difference between one of his cows and what butcher block sends us.

Ultimately after my wife had breast cancer, we both changed a lot of our eating habbits (for the better on my end I might ad due to my wifes medical issue). Lost about 40 lbs in the process LOL (I might add when I got married at age 38, I could still run 10 miles in what many would consider a pretty good time).

A good wife who believes in God more than you and can cook like no one else can be a blessing unless you have back surgery and have to give up running but you still eat like you run 7 miles a day:D

Re: "Southern Foods" food service, any experiences?

My wife and I considered this type of program about 10 years ago. We listened to the presentation and did some simple arithmetic and found the local store to be much cheaper. You can get a good freezer for $500 or so. Buy meat when you find a bargain, and there are plenty of sales going on. We buy family packs for the 2 of us and freeze them. We also do eat out quite a bit but really turned into early birds (which I swore would never happen).

Not trying to talk you out of it, do what you want. You will pay for convenience, but it is convenient.

I don't like the fat, I like all my meat as lean as can be. When it comes to steak, I only eat sirloin. Many people don't like it because it is generally lean, but I do.

Fat on steak...you don't have to eat it! It does add flavor to the meat in the cooking process though. Looking at a beef steer, fat content decreases as you move from front to back and IMHO flavor moves with it...your "pot roast" is in the front (very tasty but generally not suitable for steak because it can be tough). That is followed by the rib which not long ago was considered inferior to the T-bone/porterhouse that comes next as you move back (some idiot let the cat out of the bag and I think the rib-eye is now the more desired cut). After the porterhouse you get to your sirloin...used to be my favorite cut also but that was when I could eat an 18 oz. steak...I have since switched to a thick rib-eye where I might eat 8 oz. and save the rest for a sandwich or two. To finish our steer, after the porterhouse you get into the rump and round. Rump can be salvaged...the round is swiss steak. Btw, the "New York strip" is your T-bone/porterhouse with the bone and the tenderloin removed.
