space heater problem

I bought a used space heater and i'm having some problems with it. It starts ok and burns ok for a few minutes and then the flame stops and black smoke come out. Only adjustment i can see is a screw that appears to be an air adjustment, but it doesnt do anything when i turn it. I;m getting ready to take the top off and see if it needs cleaning or something. Apprecdiate some advice on what to look for.

Sounds like the nozzle and / or filter may need replacing. The Salamander type heater is very similar to a fuel oil furnace. You will have to take the top off to gain access to the nozzle and filter. Replace the nozzle and filter (available at most hardware stores) Make sure you use good quality fuel. I run K-1 in mine but don't use it to often anymore. I mainly used it to heat the garage. Now I have a regular oil furnace to heat with.

Most of these type heaters have a photo eye that senses the flame. If this photo eye gets dirty, and they frequently do, it can not sense the flame and it will shut the heater down. I clean mine with a paper towel and an automotive interior cleaner. A cleaner that won't damage plastic.

It could also be the igniter transformer. Does the buzzing sound stop when the heater goes out?

It fires right up every time and then goes downhill and finally blows out smoke and fumes and kind of sputters. I'll ck it today and see what i find. thx guys
