The prius battery is about 100 pounds. The cells can be replaced (very rare) if one is bad (28 cells). They do not cost $5000, and are guaranteed for 8 years or 100,000 miles. Ten years and 150,000 miles in California. My dealer says he hasn't changed one even at 250,000 and they have serviced some Prius at 300,000.
My first Prius (2008) was sold to my son when it got to 200,000 miles. No trouble. It now has 250,000 miles. Our August, 2012 Prius has 62,000 miles. My wife drives 130 miles round trip at least three times per week. Plus she drives to other sites in the state to teach classes. We have averaged driving over 4,000 miles per month for about eight years and the Prius has saved us about $2,000 in fuel per year compared to the other midsized vehicles we had. The maintenance is also a no brainer, there is hardly any. Insurance costs are lower than most midsize cars.

Could someone explain how a hybrid gets better mileage with just highway driving.

I think it is because the engine works harder to accelerate from a standstill than it does at highway speeds where both electric motor and gas engine kick in to keep the momentum going. City driving involves a lot of acceleration, hence lower mpg.

But, the first 11 miles or so are pure electric.. no? At least on the newest ones..

I do not have a Prius, I have several friends who do, they all like them. I have a VW Passat TDI, I get better mileage on the highway and they get better mileage locally. Since 90% of my driving is on the highway.. I went the TDI route. In the next town over one from me, of the taxi companies runs mostly Prius, have for at least the last 5 years. They rack up between 400K-450K miles before they get rid of them and they claim they have never changed out a battery.

A few months ago I was in a dealership and they had a new Prius on the showroom floor. While looking it over (I need awd so it's not an option for me) I noticed it had black allow wheels with silver hubcaps. I had to wonder why Toyota couldn't just paint the alloys silver. Just something funny.

I can't speak to the Prius, but my Escape hybrid uses an Atkinson cycle engine. This type of engine is more efficient than a conventional (Otto cycle) engine, but gives less torque. This lack of torque is compensated by the boost from the electric motor, which has lots of torque, even at zero rpm.
