Speaking Of Using Brakes For Turning...

At the OPS this weekend, I saw a TYM compact with the pedals properly set up for using turning brakes on the HST. Aside from the fact that I had never heard of the things, it looked like a pretty well screwed together and designed machine. Skid steer QA was standard on the loader, along with remote rear valves on the tractor and a couple of other niceties. Closest dealer to me is about 75 miles.

Everyone makes their point here. Bottom line ... for Kubotas and other machines that have the brakes and the speed pedals on the same side, you've got some awkward contortions to master if you want to use those brake pedals.

Specifically regarding Kubota's, the rep showed me that on the B3030HST Cab model, there is a hand lever to the right of the sest that is the cruise control. It's not an electric switch, more like a hand throttle or hand operated HST forward pedal. You can push that forward, push either brake, and the cruise lever does not move. I don't know if that's true for the non cab model 3030 and 2630 or not. He seemed to think the control layout was not changed for the cab model and that it would work just fine, but they didn't have one there. -- Does anyone here know for sure?

daTeacha, maybe you're on to something with using the cruise control lever as a hand throttle while using the separate brake pedals. While moving snow around today I checked, and hitting one pedal doesn't disengage the cruise, and hitting both pedals does. Next time I'll see if I can operate the hand lever in the same manner as using the hydro foot pedal. The cruise control doesn't work in reverse, though I don't know as I've had occasion to need separate brakes in reverse.

On my B3030 non-cab model the cruise works the same as the cab model. You can use the cruise lever to maintain forward motion while using the turning brakes. That setup, however is the one thing I dislike about my Kubota. I wish the brakes were on the left. It would be so much easier than having to use the cruise lever. Another reason for having the brakes on the left is if you park the tractor on a downhill slope. Try to disengage the parking brake and hit the reverse HST pedal without first rolling forward. That is when you need to put both feet on the right side of the platform. I am seriously thinking of fabricating a brake pedal on the left side just to use as a parking brake. The Kubota engineers need to wake up on this one.

Here's a picture showing the hydro pedal and the brakes. All Kubota Grand L HST models are this way, maybe others, too. Pretty tricky to keep the machine moving and hit one brake.

It takes some getting used to, thats all. It does work and just fine for me.
Separate the brake pedals, select your gear range, set your throttle, move the cruise lever with your left hand and steering wheel with your right. To turn, use the steering wheel (if the front wheels are in ground contact) and press an appropriate single brake pedal with your right foot. You can rest your foot on the hydro pedal, it will be rigid once you move the cruise control lever. Your left foot is not used, so even a one legged tractor owner can comfortably use these turning brakes when he is not busy competing at the local **** kicking contest.
It will return the cruise lever to the off position (or very close) when you step on both brake pedals together. Will scare the feces out of you when you expect to stop by pressing only one brake pedal and this machine will do a lot of damage very quickly so get used to the cruise lever in a wide open area before working close to anything. You are correct that reverse is not available when using cruise. It will soon all become second nature.
All this is well explained in the manual but becomes much clearer when attempted.
When I snowplow with mine the front wheels are usually in the air so I think the turning brakes are a great feature. I must say this though, the front wheels in the air make 4WD fairly meaningless.

All the best,
Martin
