Tractor
JD 4105
I have a 4105 that is very sluggish in forward, it will only run about 8mph in high but will run around 14mph in reverse. Any ideas on what I may need to do to fix this?
Thank you

Thank you,
It was bought used with 25hrs on it. It now has 380 but it has been like this since purchased.

Do you have factory service manual? Wondering if some how forward and reverse was not set correctly from factory since normally travel faster forward vs reverse. Might be a matter of adjusting some linkage.

Does have inline transmission fluid screen maybe starting to plug up.

Hydro transmission tractors involves using the two-pedal control system correctly and ensuring the tractor is set to the highest possible gear range. Unlike a vehicle, you cannot simply increase the engine's RPM to go faster
.
Here is how you can maximize your forward speed:
1. Engage the highest gear range
The 4105 has three hydrostatic transmission ranges: A, B, and C. You must shift the gear range selector to "C" for maximum forward speed.
  • A (Low range): For demanding jobs requiring the most torque, such as heavy tilling.
  • B (Mid range): For general-purpose tasks like mowing.
  • C (High range): For transport and light-duty work where the highest ground speed is desired.
2. Use the Twin Touch™ pedals
The speed of the tractor is controlled by how far you press the pedals, not the engine RPM.
  • The tractor has two pedals: a forward pedal and a reverse pedal.
  • For maximum speed, press the forward pedal all the way down.
3. Check for issues affecting speed
If you are already in the "C" range and have the pedal fully depressed but the tractor is still moving slowly, it could indicate a mechanical problem.
  • Check linkage: Worn or binding linkage between the foot pedals and the hydrostatic transmission can prevent you from reaching full speed. Inspect and lubricate the linkage if necessary.
  • Relieve pressure on the drivetrain: If your four-wheel-drive is engaged and binding, it can slow you down. Try moving the steering wheel back and forth while lightly pulling on the 4WD lever to disengage it.
  • Consult a professional: Problems like internal leaks or bypassing fluid within the hydraulic system can also affect speed. If you suspect an internal issue, it is best to have a qualified mechanic diagnose and repair it.
Note: The maximum speed of the tractor is limited by its design specifications. Unlike a car, modifying the engine or hydraulics to increase the top speed is not recommended and can damage the transmission.
