I have a laptop and a GPS. What kind of system do you have with your laptop. Is it software and antenna of some kind to make your laptop a GPSr.

Right now I have an Etrex Vista that I use for traveling and for wheelin.

murph, I used to use the Delorme Street Atlas and Earthmate antenna setup - Street Atlas . It worked very well. I've been using the street Atlas software for years, best I've found. I'd still be using it except that (a) someone broke into my motor home and stole the antenna (just the antenna! does them no good without the rest of it), and shortly after that, I loaned my laptop to my son and it was accidentally broken while he had it. Just about that same time we started caring for my wife's Mother and have not traveled much in the last couple of years, so I never replaced any of it. If I were to replace it today, it would be the same setup. Very reliable, good maps, lots of features.

It is way cool to travel down the road and watch the little green line move along on the map. The map automatically scrolls as the dot gets close to the edge. You can setup waypoints, stops, etc., and it will give you spoken instructions if you want them.

Murph, I am currently using Delorme Street Atlas USA just like Don did. I have a stand alone Garmin GPS also but I generally use the Delorme software with a Sony GPS antenna. The antenna attaches to the laptop via pcmcia card and draws it power from there also. The Delorme software will work with almost any GPS (stand alone device or just an antenna). If you have the data cable for your Garmin unit you can use that with the Delorme software. You will just have to change the data output on the Garmin to NMEA instead of the pre-set Garmin output format.
