Spin-On Hydraulic Strainer & Overflow for KAMA 554

Cool!

Replacing the stock strainer on my 284 was one of the first things I did. I kept mine in the resovoir though.

I just got done making up a maintenance filter assembly using a 10 micron spin-on return filter cartridge from Surplus Center and some hose and QC's. About $25 in parts but I already had the QC's. I can hook it up to filter the oil whenever I am not using the 3PH It plugs into the rear port on my 284 that was for working a dump trailer. By closing the 3PH speed regulating valve, I can send all the flow that would normally lift the 3PH fluid to that port and thru the filter to the resovoir. Since the cylinder/linkage dosn't go up, the 3PH valve stays in the raise detent and fluid continues to flow. When I need the 3PH, just open the speed reg valve and remove the filter from the supply port.

Ron,
That is a really good idea. I think there should be a better filter in the system like you've done. My stock suction strainer on my Kama 554 had a magnet inside the screen. Every time I changed the hydraulic oil or cleaned that strainer I would find fine metal shavings on the magnet. So it is important to have something to get them out besides the 149 micron suction strainer.
Do you have pictures of your set-up?

Here is a pic of the filter when I first hooked it up. When I use it I put a zip-tie on the QC where it goes into the red return port I added to the hydraulic resovoir filler cap. No pressure release on this unit so this line MUST stay connected lest I deadhead the system into the filter canister(messy:))

This is a 10 micron "Zinga" filter cartridge with internal bypass and a plain 3/8" NPT aluminum filter boss available from Surplus Center as a set for I think around $12. Extra filters were around $5 if I recall.

I specced the hose a little too short when I had it made up locally so I have added a 90 degree 3/8" NPT street elbow comming out of the filter to take the sharp bend out of the hose since this pic was taken.
