As a kid our neighbor had miles of split rail fence just like in the photo. He made his own rails, cutting trees (American chestnut or oak) then split into rails. He didn't have electricity in his cabin, or car or tractor, just draft horses. We see that fence here in Appomattox or Gettysburg.
I'd like to do that here in one area for many reasons, and it's only about 200-300 feet. It would be under & beside large pines so no weeds. There's no drilling for posts. They can easily be moved if necessary, although two spots I'd have a gate. About 5 ft. tall is fine. I'd have another gate at stable so horses could walk up there, also it could be a riding area near house. Other three sides are already fenced.
Any experience with this type of fence and source of rails, I'm thinking cedar?
Thanks.

I'm thinking neighbors rails at each intersection he had sitting on a flat stone so they didn't rot.

I have a large quantity of cedar split rail fencing, too bad you aren't closer. Stuff lasts forever.
