Spray-on protective grease for hyd cyl rods

On my snow plow cylinders I use a multipurpose grease applied with a parts brush. I put it on every spring when I'm done plowing. Same would be true if my tractor was left outside as well. I imagine spray on grease would work too. Just wipe it off before using the cylinder so any dirt picked up won't drag on the dust seals.

What is WD-40 good for? I inherited a couple dozen half-full cans and still haven't discovered an application for it.

I apply it as I rewind the cable into a drain cleaning machine that is used only 1 -2 times/year, but I can't think of any other application.

Likewise Liquid Wrench. I have found that the competing products work a lot better so I have several cans to get rid of.

Any suggestions?

WD-40 is gread at displacing water, and has some lightweight lube and solvent properties for a VERY short time.

Dewatering your 'snake' is a good job for it.

I take a can of it when i go to antique tractor shows. it is great for spraying off water from 50-60 year old tractor points distribuitor systems.

I have an AC-G tractor. one show rained out BAD. I could only get her popping on 2 cyls. I applie dthe wd-40 and tried again.. 4 cyls kicked in a few seconds.
WD / Water Displacer.. etc.

Walmart sells champion brand chain lube for motorcycle chains. It is a spray grease and is cheap. Dries into a white coating with good stickyness.

The same cylinder seals that are so good at keeping the UTF in the cylinders will be equally good at keeping grease out of the cylinders and away from the UTF. I would not hesitate to just use the machine and let the grease get wiped off.

Someone already mentioned FluidFilm. I'd highly recommend it for protecting metal exposed to water. It's made from Lanolin and is non-toxic. I use gallons of it per year. So far, I've not seen any compatibility problems with use around mineral oils or rubber parts and seals.

Just cycle the pistons a few times every month or so and you should not have any problems.

If you cannot, just wipe them down with hydrolic fluid... no worries about contamination then.

I use LPS-3 on my backhoe which is stored outside. I only spray it when I am storing for a month or more. Recently I put it on the tractor for the first time in 2006 and it was fine. I use mineral sprits to clean off the LPS-3.
